Horror at Navy’s Acceptance of Satanist Sailor
By Rachel Williams, PA News
The Royal Navy’s decision to officially recognise a non-commissioned officer as a Satanist – allowing him to practise rituals on board ship – was condemned today as “utterly shocking”.
Tory former minister Ann Widdecombe said there should be “no question whatsoever” of allowing naval technician Chris Cranmer to engage in Satanic worship practices at sea.
Ldg Hand Cranmer has become the first registered Satanist in the British Armed Forces after the captain of HMS Cumberland agreed to recognise his beliefs.
“I am utterly shocked by this,” Miss Widdecombe said.
“Satanism is wrong. Obviously the private beliefs of individuals anywhere including the Armed Forces are their own affair but I hope it doesn’t spread.
“There should be no question whatsoever of allowing Satanist rituals on board any ship in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy.
“What they believe and do in their own home is one thing, what they do at work is the business of their employer.
“The Navy should not permit Satanist practices on board its ships.
“God himself gives free will, but I would like to think that if somebody applied to the Navy and said they were a Satanist today it would raise its eyebrows somewhat.”
Ldg Hand Cranmer, 24, is from Edinburgh and has been in the Navy for four years, according to the Sunday Telegraph.
He was promoted to leading hand – the naval equivalent of corporal – in July last year.
He is now reportedly lobbying the Ministry of Defence to make Satanism a registered religion in the Armed Forces, although an MoD spokesman said it was not aware of any approach about the issue.
Ldg Hand Cranmer told the paper he realised he was a Satanist nine years ago when he “stumbled across” a copy of the Satanic Bible – written by Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey.
“I then read more and more and came to realise I’d always been a Satanist, just simply never knew,” he said.
A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: “We are an equal opportunities employer and we don’t stop anybody from having their own religious values.”
He added: “Our policy is that, wherever practical, reasonable requests for time and facilities that do not impact on operational effectiveness or the welfare of other personnel, are met.”
The Church of Satan was established in San Francisco in 1966 and LaVey was its high priest until his death in 1997.
Followers live by the Nine Satanic Statements, which include “Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence; Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek, and Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification.”

Not had a HMS Satan as far as I know.
Several references exist to vessels carrying the name HMS Lucifer though!. Dont think we’re due for a new L-class of anything soon so I think the chances of a new commission with that name are quite slim. Were the demand suddenly strong enough one of the new Daring’s could be commissioned as HMS Diablo I guess!
Cant see it though!
Picture below is the ship formerly-known-as HMS Lucifer, she was a batch II Attacker Class escort carrier, built, IIRC, circa 1943. She was renamed HMS Trumpeter as seen in the photo.

HMS Satan?

You´re entitled to your own personal opinion. Personally, I think he has the right to practice his religion as well as anyone else. Satanism was conceived to oppose Christianity. It´s just as stupid and irrational as the other, its origin.
“Ethics and morals,” example 2… 😉

Take it your out of RNR now?
Well out of it mate. I decided to leave when they got rid of the MSF’s (1994) a sad day for the RNR – they lost thier individuality that day. Also when they brought in this OM Trade **** (I knew it wouldn’t work) and then said anyone who was a Weapons Tiff was to Cut over 😡 AND LOOSE 😡 Their rank in the process really endeared me to their lordships as well. Needless to say.The whole thing was a Cluster **** and 6 months later they came looking for thier old Artificers to rejoin. By which time I was out of the country. 😎

Wotcher Suggsy!,
Thats fishgard Block at HMS Raliegh isn’t it?
Yep you got happy memories of the drill square just outside the block too!?. Did more press-ups on that bloody piece of tarmac than anywhere else on this planet!. Don’t know which divisions messdeck that is in the shot. Sherval divs. (mine) was top floor right corner and had windows along the back wall, as shown in that shot, so I guess it was someone elses. Remember the wooden stairs between floors in those blocks? Guess who got to clean one flight with his toothbrush one fine day ‘cos some of his dobie-dust had spilled on his kit just before inspection!?
We used to get the same cr@p off the instructors as the Tiffs (Universally hated by the Navy because they got advancement on passing exams) I wouldn’t have bothered only I was an RNR Tiff and they always thought I was hiding out in the RNR mess.
We were a bit jammy on that score as we were the first bunch of baby tiffs that our PO had ever been trusted with so he went about with a very cheery disposition towards us – most of the time. Dont half remember what youre saying about being disliked – queueing up for the galley used to be real bloody fun – not!.

Yo Jonsey!
Thats fishgard Block at HMS Raliegh isn’t it?
The RNR’s were put in there on the top floor as I recall which was not good. We used to get the same cr@p off the instructors as the Tiffs (Universally hated by the Navy because they got advancement on passing exams) I wouldn’t have bothered only I was an RNR Tiff and they always thought I was hiding out in the RNR mess. Used to **** me off somewhat so the D.O. said that I should wear my ‘Hooks’ – they left me alone after that 😀
… Will never forget that special PVR Pen

Viewer discretion required…
….some may find this offensive. This is what the good Leading Rate is talking about though:
The Nine Satanic Statements
1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years! The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.The Nine Satanic Sins
1. Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.
2. Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.
3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.
4. Self-deceit—It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements” but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!
5. Herd Conformity—That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.
6. Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.
7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.
8. Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.
9. Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.
IMO if you removed the devil-imagery and some of the fringe elements (Magic?) from this there is a core element of ‘Realism’ in there that would have an appeal to more than just one bright-spark sailor.
Like I said above I knew/know a few members of all three UK armed services that fit at least some of the above criteria quite merrily and shamelessly!.
Nitin,
The orgies! Dont forget the orgies!!
Attached below is an image of the Messdecks assigned to each division of Fisgard Sqdn at HMS Raleigh. I’ll try and find some photo’s of the ‘gulches’ (messdecks) aboard a Type 22 FFG for comparison that makes the Raleigh set up look like a palace!.
These are not places for orgies! :D. Though there were certain runs ashore…..!.

What a joke, just another move by the Labour Party to undermine britains armed forces.
Personally, its a disgrace and the guy should be chucked over board, with any luck, he may “slip” whilst on deck…. 🙂
Satan would approve 😀

Looks like people differ in opinion as to what constitutes “at home” and “at work”, which of course is diffcult to seperate when you are on a ship.
What are examples of beliefs or related activities that the RN has in fact considered to negatively impact operational effectiveness or personnel welfare? (i.e. where do they draw the line?)
