Saving The Shorts Sarafand Wing Tip Float

The story so far.
Many years ago after much negotiation, I acquired what is now known as maybe the last surviving piece of the shorts sarafand flying boat, the early development wing tip float. It has been offered for sale and also offered to the landguard fort museum, I am moving overseas permanently and it has to go, it is still offered for sale and I am open to sensible offers, Contact 50cc@gmx.com for more information and pics.
Thank you

What price is being asked for the float? I’ve been through the posts on this thread several times but it doesn’t appear to be here. I assume that it’s not confidential so maybe someone can say. Also, from what material is it constructed and what would be its scrap value?

It’s not only about money, if it was the asking price would be much higher. Its about saving what I assume to be the only part surviving, of this magnificent flying boat the largest ever built in the uk, of cause if it does not turn u on, and cannot be saved then so be it, but I would like to remind all on this blog that when it was up for sale some time ago, I was criticised for doing so from this blog for disposing of the nations heritage, need I say any more!!

You must excuse my cynicism; been in the business for far too long.

Its a tricky thing – any item is worth what an individual is prepared to pay. If you are lucky, there will be more than one person who wants your item, and so the price might rise.

I have, incidentally ‘put my money where my mouth is’ on many occasions, and continue to do so.

Its a good job some people put there money where there mouths are, otherwise others would have nothing to talk about. The rocketeer is doing a good job and should be supported, the price for saving this important piece of our history would not cover the storage costs, I should know i saved it in the first place, its a work of art, but some people would not know it if it slapped them!

Pay lots of money or I’ll scrap it?

Sounds familiar. Not everything has a huge value, no matter how rare it is.

Ok, status so far.

It would appear that Landguard Fort and Felixstowe Museum and MAPS at Rochester are not interested.

We are also around £500 shy on the acquistition cost.

So we have 2 problems:-

A Home – any suggestions/offers?
Money – again, any suggestions?

After over 30years in active aviation preservation, I have realised that I cannot do it all and save everything. But this relic is worthy of preservation.

Any suggestions welcome as are offers of practical help.

If it was Spitfire we would not even be having this discussion!!

It is wholly possible that with suitable donations, transport and a home (Landguard Fort? or NSAM) that this float could be saved.

Anyone interested in helping?

Landguard Fort would be an entirely appropriate place for it. Please PM me details and your aspirations.

Is this the one that was on ebay a couple of years ago that used to be used as a dinghy with outrigger?

If I recall it was stainless with an opening in the upper from when used as a dinghy.

I was watching it both times it was listed to see what value was realised – sorry to see that it has not yet found a home.
