Control towers on disused airfields continue to ‘die’ at an alarming rate . Having flown into Ludham late last year i was dismayed to see the former museum tower there lapsing back into dereliction. Whilst I cannot readily think of any that have a grade II listing are there any still derelict that are crying out for restoration?

Beccles control tower is still standing, and my favourite spot for shooting porno pictures of willing young nubiles, what with graffiti, broken rendering, tangled rusty metal, bunker, foliage, and aforementioned naked nubiles. Not sure my pix would be the best for the website…..

The control tower at Tangmere is derelict and boarded up,I think the museum would love it but the two are at least half a mile apart.

I’ve driven past Woolfox Lodge on the A1 many times over the last few years and the tower there looks pretty derelict. Always meant to stop off and have a nose, but I only ever think about it after I’ve gone past it.

Do you know anything about what happened to the airframes at Ludham and the exhibits within the museum itself? I visited about eight years ago and found it to be a fascinating collection. And is the tree still there that was hit by a 100th BG B-17?

Martlesham Heath and Parham both in Suffolk are worth a visit. MH last Sunday had a Spitfire from BBMF do three passes, one very low and a couple of Stearmans passed by.
Saw a lived in tower at Stourhead Wilts in July believe it was originally HMS Hummingbird. It is a shame when some are in such a state of repair but on the bonus side those that have been refurbished lets just thank those owners and volunteers for their many efforts, you are a credit to the aviation fraternity.

From what I remember last time I heard anything from Crail I notice that there was a message sayingthat the naval typed tower was to be restored and developed into some kind of museum. Does anyone have any more on this one.
Also anyone know what will happen with the tower at Edinburgh airport / Turnhouse when the new one is supposed to be getting built.
I know that the tower at East Fortune went derelict but as the museum airshows became popular they restored it so it was wind and water proof. Still a bit of a mess really but then it isnt really used apart from once or twice a year so I guess they see it as wind and water proof is good enough.

I’m not sure what the current status is of Lavenham and Earls Colne towers, both were in use as private dwellings at one time, the Earls colne tower certainly being empty by the end of the 80’s.
On the flip side of this a one tower that is lovingly preserved is at Thorpe Abbotts, I visited there last weekend and it’s certainly worth a look (went there again today, but didn’t get a great deal of opportunity to see very much of it, more of a flying visit)
