Went to PIK, it was wet, grey and miserable. But hey, I saw a DC-8 !!! 🙂
And the other stuff too…

African International is essentially a British Airline & the aeroplanes are maintained accordingly. Remember IAS? Long may they fly. 😎
ooops: thanks for the clarification mate and it explains why.

Very nice pix.
This DC8 looks very well maintained. Not that usual for an African Jet.

It took off at 1534 approx
[expletive deleted] I saw the Ryanair taxying for 31 as I drove round the bypass (A77), so I must have just missed it. ho hum, but thanks for the pics

No idea what it was carrying but that juggernaut you captured was escorted down the taxiway less than an hour before take off. Seems very strange to me that they loaded her where they did ?

So did I 😉 But mine aren’t as good quality as yours! 😮
I thought it was going to depart r/w 🙁 21 in the first pic but it was just going down to the 03 threshold to load up (any ideas what it was carrying) then about an hour or so later it departed 31 for Baku.

Ren, what time was the DC-8 there? I stopped off at Monkton about 15:30 on the way back from Girvan. Weather was chucking it down then. Ryanair were back to there old trick of using 13 instead of the active 31. Depends mostly on what is inbound if ATC can route them out on 13.
Ken
It took off at 1534 approx, I was at Monckton around 1440 approx, then moved to the other side thinking it was gone. It was parked out of sight round on the other runway. I was about to leave when I heard it start up and request clearance to taxi.

I bet those strech DC-8s would be quite easy to put out of trim in a cargo config with such a long body!
By: Hand87_5 - 20th September 2004 at 10:42
of course I think this is one of the best looking DC-8s about
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/639850/L/
Not a biased opionion at all 😉

And doesn’t it look great in the new livery of UPS 🙂

I always thought that if you took one of the longer DC8’s with the replacement CFM engines and slightly modified the nose you’d have what looks like a 4 engined 757!
like so?

They were a great plane to fly on, as in my opinion were most of the Douglas products
I agree . Douglas were and are the bests 🙂

Would that have been my Ryanair from Gothenburg by any chance? Not that I was on it this time.
Quite possibly, it was outbound and just for a change the tower put their foot down and made them take off using the same runway as everyone else.
