Came across these pics and scanned them – dating from late 80’s, the result of an hours stop on the roadside at the end of the airfield. Mostly F111’s – a few more pics later.

One from Upper Heyford was lost in about 1972 when it had a control malfunction. That dumped its fuel before crashing somewhere near Buckingham. That one trailed a flame before coming down. I think the crew ejected safely before impact. I know this as I saw it while having a coffee in my office in Aylesbury. It was only later when I saw the news on the TV that it all slotted together.
On the subject of Heyford F-111’s. They used to pass over my office in Shefford, Beds in bevies of 1 to 4 aircraft on very long finals to Heyford.

didn’t the Aussies lose one doing this very same party piece ?
No, the RAAF never lost an F111 doing this.

I have a long term project selecting usable prints from my filing system (i.e. old shoe boxes and albums found in the bottom of the wardrobe) and have scanned the following prints of F111’s. The Ravens (I believe that’s what they were called?) were shot at Alconbury mid-90’s; The RAAF example doing a dump-&-ignite was at Fairford a few years later – didn’t the Aussies lose one doing this very same party piece ?

Cool pics, thanks for sharing 91Regal. The F111 use to do a flypast over Biggin Hill during the Air Fair. Remarkable aircraft! 🙂
