Schneider Trophy

What happened to all the aircraft (esp. the RR ones)? Have there been any replicas esp. flying ones? Why is there so little interest in this country in a british victory?

Hi Simon,

Bought and read, an interesting book. Do you happen to know whether a copy or transcription of his flight log is available for the time he spent with the High Speed Flight?

Cheers

Why not?

A replica of a dedicated world speed record craft to fly 1/2 dozen times (max) and at the absolute best of the technology of the time, but now containing dead end technology? Have a look at the engine cooling methods, the sizes of the floats, and the prop setup for a start.

Could be done, but not a sensible idea.

Cheers

Perhaps the logistics of operating a replica from the water only and inherent dangers of the fact that landing is more dangerous on water than runways would make insurance prohibitive.

Or maybe the S6 design isn’t an easy aircraft to fly.

Just opinions but I really think you would get around all of that and it sure would be a spectacle.

Olds Cool is right. Not enough recognition of this fine achievement by the British (and Italians for that matter).

Because a replica wouldn’t be built the same way – it’d be made using different materials and, probably most importantly, the engine. All that needs to be stressed etc for flight, and that’s only part of it!

There was a thread in the GA forum about my building a replica Spitfire a while ago… I’ll go fetch the link…

Hi DH,
Yes, as far as I can tell, G-BJHS was the last. (I’m sure we’ll get a correction if someone knows different..)

Would the last pure maritime aircraft have been the Sunderland?
I saw it moored at Hythe in August 1989, I think before Kermit bought it, and it was here for a few years after that.
I’ve got a pic of it somewhere but it’s not very good. S*ds Law, whenever I see a one-off like that I’ve only got a rubbish camera with me.

True, sad that the legislation would be too great, even here in NZ also.
Dreams are free !!

Hey I checked out that Britishpathe site. Very interesting.
Thanks for that, James 🙂

A Supermarine S-5/6 replica would be nice…

But remember, they were very marginal machines. The S-5 rep had completely different floats (much bigger IIRC) and a lot of obvious changes, to do it ‘authentically’ would probably result in an a/c which the CAA wouldn’t be prepared to certify. Also there is and has been NO pure maritime aircraft operating from British waters for at least a decade now. Fancy your own (water) airfield and costs?

Lovely stuff, part of the past.

For footage of the real thing, check ot www.britishpathe.com and search in the right areas.

Cheers
James

Thanks, Daz. I’ll see if I can procure a copy.:)

You know, you’re right into doing a Spitfire replica,…what about an S-6B rep ?
I don’t think anyone has ever done one of those before.
Sure it’d be more limited in it’s application being a seaplane and all, but surely be novel…:D

Mmmm,…7/10 scale MC-72 replica powered by 2 x V6 car engines in tandem….thinking thinking…;)

Here’s another pic of the MC-72 engine(s) in the airframe to give a perspective.

If you already haven’t, click on the link I posted earlier to listen to the MC-72 flypast sound. It’s truly awesome !!

Tell me please, are there any movies made of the Schneider Cup, whether they be fictionalised, documentaries or otherwise ?
I really would love to see more footage of these great racers in action.

Cheers
Chris

S5 Replica

Guzzineil
The S5 replica crashed fatally on 23rd May 1987 near Mylor, Cornwall. The offical report stated the tail detatched due to flutter during its first flight in seven months…
Very sad
