My sister told me that the schools my nephews attend only allow children a maximum of 2 weeks off in term-time for holidays.
Gosh my parents would have been locked up, as I used to have 3 holidays abroad each year and all were taking during term time! Once a teacher asked to speak to my mum and told her that I was having too much time off for holidays. My mother took no notice and told the teacher that travel was educational and that my trips were spent exploring other cultures and history, which they were to an extent as they were never just beach holidays as we always hired a car or took excursions.

Hm. We used to go away thrice a year too, but in America, we had Thanksgiving, February and Summer, and in Belgium Christmas, spring and summer. Where I went to school in the US, it would be allowed if a note was handed in- my cousin tells me it’s still permitted, and most of the Middle Eastern and Asian students go away for half of February, which only has 15 school days anyway….

Looking back, I dont know how I got away with it but I did! My mum is not a lady to be messed with and stood her ground with the school. I even went to Senegal for a fortnight missing several OLevel exams. I still think the experiences of my time in Africa are worth more than a certificate and taught me more about how people live in relative poverty.

I’d rather fill a form out than pay 400 quid, so what’s the problem, captainben?
Just filling out forms that schools don’t need, we never used to it, just ring them up, tell them the dates and thats it. At my school, they need to know everything like: Date of departure, departure time, flight number, arrival time, destination, holiday resort, it’s like they could be stalking us! 🙁

Do it yourself, I’ve just booked flights to Faro on Mytravellite for Sun 14th Aug 2005 – Sun 4th Sept 2005 (3 weeks) for just over £600 for 5 of us. I can get 4 star accomodation near portimao for 90 euros a night.
If people are stupid enough to pay to stay over inflated prices to stay in a high rise dump in Benidorm, that’s their fault.

I’m away on holiday just before half term, because of it, I have to fill out a holiday form and if it isn’t filled in, my parents get charged £400. £100 each child! Flippen Shocking.

Waste of taxpayer’s money to take kids out of school during term time. Full stop. Unless it’s a public school in which case it’s ok.

I think it ok to take kids away and they miss the first week or 2 weeks off towards the end of the year when things are winding down but 2 weeks anywhere in the middle of the year is not acceptable. But as long as they are paying fares and giving the airlines money to pay my wages in a few years I couldnt give a toss.
