Hey, I’m new here, I wonder if you guys and girls could help me out a bit.
I’m an American and have decided this summer that I want to do my masters degree in the UK. So after a bit of researching, I’ve applied to 7 schools. The degree is a taught degree (I’m switching fields, originally studied business management for my BSc, so I figured it would be best to get some book based learning on the field before I do anything else) in either International Politics/Studies or European Studies. I’ve applied to the following.
U. of Birmingham (rejected, *******s, if I ever take over the world, I’m going to turn it into a fashion school)
U. of Glasgow (?)
U. of Nottingham (?)
U. of Leeds (accepted)
U. of Surrey (accepted)
U. of Reading (?)
U. of Plymouth (accepted)
Basically, I didn’t apply to top tier universities because I didn’t think I’d be smart enough to get in, regret it a bit now.
So, what I want to know is how are the reputations of those schools and if you had to decide where would you go (taking into consideration: reputation, ability to get jobs, area as well as anything else you might be able to think of.)
Thanks

I am just starting my 3rd and final year of International Relations at Leeds.
I certainly echo everything said above about the city (couldn’t be happier there!) but send me a PM if you want to chat a bit more about the course, and the POLIS department etc.

I’ve been told a lot about Leeds being a great school town, so I’m not so much concerned about that. I think out of all the cities, it’s probably the best when it comes to being a student (I imagine costs for most things are reasonable as it has to cater to student needs). What I am worried about is the sheer size of the school. I went to a very large university (Boston University) and what I learned there is big universities aren’t the best when it comes to meeting the needs of individual students (and all the red tape that is usually involved). I do understand that the masters programs would be far less crowded so there would be a better means to distinguish yourself, but my hatred for BU (because of all of the red tape that was involved) has got me a bit freaked out about Leeds these days. I guess I didn’t think through my choices as much as I had previously thought.

Asking me.Write i am a leeds lad so of course this is going to biased. Leeds Uni is the one you should really have a go at. I mean lets starts with going back to america for a week/10 days. You will have a great train link to manchester airport or simply use the local airport to fly down to heathrow to go onto onward connections.
Jobs they will be easy to find beacuse there are new bulidings popping up here and there with cafes and Resturants and Shops
As for the repuation well it is Only Harehills/Beeston/Chapletwon what has got us a reputaion so anyway you wont be going near them.
Tranpsort around the city is nearlly every 1-2 minutes into leeds.
P.S-Headingley is a MAJOR student Village as i like to call it

ah, that’s actually what i’m thinking as well… although the people at leeds were really nice, i almost feel indebted to them, i’m beginning to lean towards surrey… the program director has the same research interests as i do (devolution and EU development)… anyways, it’s so close to london that it would make everything easier in terms of eventually trying to get a job… but we shall see… thanks for the input…

My older cousins went to the University of Surrey and they thought it was great. Its pretty much in the centre of Guildford and i dont think they had any problems finding a job.
Theres good transport links and whatever into London.
Oooh and the Odeon cinema! 😀
