……. it was pretty impressive stuff – Connie, Boeing 247, DC-3, plus the bikes and cars in the main hangar. Oh, and the Gugnunc…
Don’t forget the DH Dragon and Dragon Rapide. Indeed an impressive collection – I am just sad that, somehow, the Boeing 707 cut up at Cosford couldn’t have gone to Wroughton.

As a Science Museum aside, this weekend is a very rare chance to visit the reserve collection at Wroughton , near Swindon.
They have some amazing stuff there, not just aviation, but there is a Constellation, so what other excuse is needed. Admission seems to be free, with just a £2 charge to park.
It is possible to visit during the rest of the year – just contact them, ask nicely and they might be able to arrange a personal visit. Did that a couple of years back on a trip ‘down south’, and it was pretty impressive stuff – Connie, Boeing 247, DC-3, plus the bikes and cars in the main hangar. Oh, and the Gugnunc…

It’s a pity the Victor B1 model has a B2 tail number.

aagghhhh! an airbus undercarriage leg! RUN AWAY!
The computer screens are, I think, a great idea, and should form part of every self repecting LARGE museum. They are aimed at the kids for very good reason – in twenty years time, THEY will be looking after our aviation eritage and should be kept interested from the first time they are at ANY museum. My five year old can run rings around me on the computer, and it is down to seeing pictures on the computer that she really wanted to see the real aeroplanes.
At the cold war museum part of cosford, the touch screens occasionally show a large red button labelled as ‘do not press’. Press it and you are shown a nuclear blast….. nice touch…
While I’m on, why does the Saro Skeeter have anti-shimmy tyres on? They are remeniscent of Vampire nose wheel…..

I just want to add my praise for the UK science museum, all the bits with the fancy touch screens and interactive cr*p are as boring as hell but apparently you have to put up with that in modern museums. However the aviation bits are fantastic with some very important and interesting specimens. I just hope that they are kept looked after and on display and not sacrificed to make more space for toddler friendly computer screens.

You seem to have missed one of the most historic aircraft there . . .
The one and only surviving Gloster E28/39!

http://www.oxtrust.org.uk/events/292421 gives some detail of the event. Wroughton airfield is up in the hill about 4 miles from Swindon. It has a fine collection of aircraft, incluing a Gugnunc ! ( yes ,simmer down ) Constellation and other goodies, as well as vehicles, and loads of fascinating stuff.
It is open Sat and Sun 9.00 -5.00 I think

Have you got any more info on this? Address, times etc.
I’ve got a free weekend and this sounds excellent.
Thanks,
John
