SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

This is no racial slur or discriminatory comments I have against my black friends and I apologise if they do cause offence but have you noticed how they are miles better on track athletics events than there white counterparts i.e. 100m, 200m, 400m, most long distance running 1500m. Kenyans, Jamaicans, Ethiopians. Whereas in the swimming events you don’t see many black swimmers and even when you do they are continuously overpowered by this time there white opponents.??????

Does anybody have an explanation to these two differing but slightly similar arguments because they are both using speed but in two different mediums, air & water.

I completely agree with kev35.

Adonis,
You already knew the answer to your own question; there is no debate. When you posted your BBC report, I got thinking why in the world I wasted my time in answering your question.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

Adonis,

Sorry for any offence, I just don’t see the point of debating it really. Perhaps if you’d started by telling us how this discrepancy occurs it may have generated more debate.

“KEV35 (is that your age or your shoe size?)”

Sorry to disappoint you but my age is 41 and my shoe size 42.

Adonis,

“no disrespect to the commnwealth but the only reason the nigerian beat the gibralten was because there were no russians , americans , australians and europeans present!!.”

I think you’ll find that that was one of the qualifying heats. Australia is part of the Commonwealth and currently lead the medals table. In the swimming, they’re very easy to recognise with their yellow swimming helmets and the fact that they win the majority of their races.

KEV35 (is that your age or your shoe size?)

My aim is not to be provocative ,if you had read my original thread you would have seen that. I was only trying to stimulate a debate and promote everybodys point of view.

Adonis,

If you knew the answer why did you bother to ask the question?

Unless of course you were trying to be provocative…

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

The reason black athletes run better and faster is that they have a more powerful spring mechanism in their calfs and more explosive. i remember reading about this rather unusual debate on the bbc.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

adonis- To give you an example, when I go to the beach, I very rarely see black people swimming, they just hangout or cruise the boardwalk. I recall learning to swim as a child, it was a harrowing experience, and took alot of family members time and help to make it a success for me. I simply dont think its something that blacks grow up doing. A similar comparison was in WW1 and WW2, most sailors were unable to swim and drown went their ships were sunk, I guess because they were drawn mostly from lowerclass backgrounds where they never experienced swimming.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

It has something to do with genetic make up. Blacks have better genes when it comes to athletic prowess.

As for Blacks not competing in Swimming, Golf, e.t.c, this has something to do with them being elitist sports. Most blacks were not even allowed into a swimming pool let alone a golf course.

The reason they are not taking up those sports in larger numbers now is due to the absence of adult black sportsmen in these sports. Youngsters need to identify with their race and this has not been a possibility. People like Tiger Woods will definitely help to tilt the balance.

In african nations, swimming pools, tennis courts and golf courses are an oddity and most people don’t have access to such facilities.

Track & Field like Football(Soccer) are popular all over the world because everyone can take part without the need for special equipment.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

Yes and No,

The blacks in countries like America, Canada and Australia which have the same training facilities as their white counterparts don’t seem to come through the ranks to take up swimming and even if they do they aint as good as whites.

Countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Jamaica are just the tip of the Iceberg when it comes to running, because when whites go to see level countries like kenya and brazil to train they generally underperform against black athletics. Take a simple 100m race

D.Chambers
M.Green
A.Boldon
F.Fredericks
T.Montgomery
O.Thompson
B.Surin
D.Baily

and at last years 100m World Champs all runners were black

August 5th
Finals
1 M Greene (USA) 9.82sec
2 T Montgomery (USA) 9.85
3 B Williams (USA) 9.94
4 A Boldon (Tri) 9.98
5 D Chambers (Gbr) 9.99
6 K Collins (Skn) 10.07
7 C Malcolm (Gbr) 10.11
8 A Zakari (Gha) 10.24

I think its simply because they dont have access to swimming as much as whites. For example blacks are already having huge success at sports like golf, tennis and hockey even though their represented by very small numbers in these sports.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

I think Saab’s pretty much right. With many of the indigenous populations of Africa, the ability to run is probably an essential and integral part of their growing up. You hear the commentators suggesting that what they lack in technique they more than make up for in stamina.

As for swimming, you do need special facilities and like Saab says they’re just not around in some of the developing countries. I think the important thing to remember is the commitment all these athletes have to their sport and this is being amply illustrated in the Commonwealth Games going on in Manchester at the moment.

RE: SCIENCE: SWIMMERS & ATHLETES! ! ! !

They are good at running because I would guess they are used to the heat and in cases such as Kenya, they are used to running at high altitudes where there is less oxygen,so when it comes to running at sea level they are well prepared.I would think they are not very good at swimming because really how many swimming pools are there in places such as Ethiopia?
