Scottish money

Cat…pigeons…go!

The Scottish government said keeping the pound and the services of the Bank of England as part of a currency union under independence made sense for both Scotland and the rest of the UK

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-26166794

So keeping the pound apparently makes sense for both Scotland and the rest of the UK, according to the pro independence Scottish government, but keeping Scotland in with the rest of the UK doesn’t?

Of course, they would want that since they would not have to start at the bottom of the pile with an unproven currency, whereas the pound sterling is known all over the world, especially since they cannot go straight to the Ecu…

What say you, other geezas?

Mothminor – as I said many posts ago, none of my many Scottish friends will be voting yes, not one. But don’t worry it won’t happen!;)

To all who have expressed similar thoughts – can I please ask that, should the vote be Yes, spare a thought for us Scots who voted No, not because of any financial considerations or suchlike but because we have always considered ourselves British first; have English family and friends; and see this referendum as a total waste of time and money.

This is why the vote has to have a LARGE [as in more than 85% majority] for it to work otherwise it could be a real bone of contention for a very long time.

Either way some are bound to be disappointed.

The whole thing is horrifically divisive – but that matters not at all to Salmond it would seem.

Re 199

Al, that admission has tugged so hard that I’m blubbering into my porridge just before I dance a reel to the tune of Highland Laddie while reading a verse or two from wee Rabbie Burns.

Altho’ a proud Anglo Saxon, Scottish influences congregate in my veins as one half of my family come from Northumbria close to the Border.

I’m with Charlie at 200.

Aw, Al – there’s Moggy and Benyboy and a few others who have nailed their colours to your mast. And I am not against independence – I just don’t believe it will happen, that’s all.

Nice sentiment and not to be underestimated. But, if they hadn’t been there, we’d have dug a little deeper.

As I’ve said before, Scottish independence has nothing to do with hating everything English, it’s just that we don’t want to be part of a ‘democratic’ political system where our voice is overwhelmed by a 10:1 culturally and ethnically different majority…

But that, essentially, is Scotland’s problem; it isn’t that you are being repressed, it is just that you are, well, a minority.

I am glad to hear that there is no hatred of ‘everything English’ but it would be nice to have at least some acknowledgement of the positive side to the Union even though I know it is the run-up to the referendum and ‘they nicked all our oil’ is more likely to garner votes for independence.

Imagine how fewer opportunities there would have been for Scotland without it being part of the British Empire? And how many of those ‘close run things’ England would have lost without Scotland at our side?

Re 181

Al, my sensitive soul is quite touched by your compliments. I was rather stupidly led to believe that you were so rabidly a Scots Nat that you would not depart in the slightest from your entrenched viewpoint indeed, settling for nothing less than Hadrians Wall rebuilt to modern civil engineering standards complete with machine gun embrasures and minefields and public address system, announcing on an automatic broadcast “Hoots mon – awa’ we ye”. I hope that this picture isn’t too lurid.

But, all is not lost – we have common ground. Braemar Castle? Is that the same as Balmoral? I’m with you on this one ! But, consider this; it might be that any independence settlement might have the Scottish (cough, ahem) ‘British’ taxpayer continuing to support the resident OAPs ?

As for your strictures regarding the continued use of the language of the foreign invaders and oppressors, it was only the Yanks/British who got a bit shirty and almost voted for German – which is after all just another version of English. No Al, you’re in a bit of a cleft stick on the question of which language to use. If independence is to mean anything, you have to abandon the language of the ‘tyrants’.

Al, may I ask you a sincere question ? Do you ever feel lonely ?

By ‘we’, I was referring to the Nationalists. Don’t forget that the Scottish people overwhelmingly voted in the SNP, knowing full well their independence agenda.

]

Well in fact they won just over 45% of the vote, which might represent the result of the referendum vote – unless a few are having second thoughts!!;)

May I rephrase that, Al? “Some of us…perhaps a bit more than half, maybe less than half….”

Nor should you be, which is why I am a wholehearted supporter of the ‘Yes’ campaign. I’d hate to live in a country where elected MPs from another country voted on decisions in my country that didn’t affect them in the slightest.

I’m warming to you Moggie – I had no idea just how altruistic and empathetic you really are…

English is probably the best and most descriptive language to take us into the IT and scientific future, and it will probably be seen as one of the finest legacies which England has bestowed to the world.
