hurricane wing roots

A scrapyard in north Liverpool, in Kirby, in 1956, was surrounded by a fence made of Hurricane wing roots. In the scrapyard were scrap Venom NF3s only 4 years old. Any piccies anywhere?

I have to confess that I too found Mk 1’s post a trifle enigmatic – but I put it down to the way I perceived my brain to be working after last night!

Sikorsky S55 or S58 perhaps?

..Mr Mk1 sir, was the S58 suggestion related to a proposal to get an engineless 170 high enough off the ground, to glide all it’s way to Lydd..??:)

Though not strictly speaking a scrapyard, I found this in the backyard of a farmer amid the odd bits and pieces of derelict farm equipment. It’s a Lockheed Hudson aft fuselage, A16-128, with the original USAAF serial showing through the Australian colourscheme. I believe this was rescued for the Tocumwal base museum, but have no idea where it is now.

Another couple of aircraft that appeared on the fire pits at RAF Leeming and RAF West Raynham in the early 1970s.

Firstly VarsityT1 WL625 photohgraphed at RAF Leeming on 21 June 1972.

But find me a suitably sized and powered tug to get an engineless 170 off the ground at Lydd and to tow it to such a height that it could glide from there to Coventry!

It would have been a difficult journey to Coventry without them!

Ha…or perhaps not..!! Dad flew them with Air Charter for a while, he reckoned in the right conditions, whilst landing empty they’d just sail along the runway with that massive wing turning them into the biggest glider on earth…go on for miles and miles if you let them..

Great stuff to see, this is a thread which will last forever so its great to keep a steady flow of pix rather than posting all at once because most of us enjoy visiting the forum daily for 30-60 minutes:)

RAF Catterick

I have no photos of Varsities at Catterick in the 1972 period because I did not recall seeing any at that time. I do have a couple of WF422 and WL629 on a return visit in 1977.

I am trying to post all my pictires in chronological order so if you want to hang on a little while they will be up in due course. Of course if you’re desperate let me know and I can e-mail them to you.

QuePee, do you have any photo’s of the Varsity’s that were at Catterick? My interest is down to the fact I have the main flying panel from one of them! Would be nice to see!

Thanks for the confirmation of 224 Sqn. My memory still seems to be intact after some 38 years.
You are right, Catterick was very heavily populated with aircraft, most of them had a relatively short life. Some were allocated as rescue training frames and they tended to hang around a bit longer but life expectancy was still pretty short. It is interesting to note that I tried to use my contacts to get to the other Fire Rescue School at RAF Manston and they were totally un receptive. Health and Safety issues apparently, yes even in those days.

So here is the next batch from RAF Catterick. Note the “Air Bruce” titles on the Shacks…

I really had no idea that so many airframes went to the fire school at Catterick, it looks almost like a scrapping site!
Interesting to see the ex SAH Sea Hawk there aswel.
204 sqn makes sense with the Shack MR.2s, they disbanded at Honington in ’72.

RAF Catterick

OK, I will continue. Two positive votes is enough for me.

An MR3 Shack was visible in a previous picture but they were not too concerned about that one. The ones they did not want photographed are those included in this set. They had jsut flown in a few days prior to my visit from RAF Honington and were exactly as the flight crews left them except that they may have been moved. Absolutely no spares recovery had taken place at that time. Someone will confirm or correct but I believe they were from 204Sqn.

I do have the serial numbers for practically everything in these photographs and can provide them if anyone is interested.
