SCRAPYARDS again

Apologies if this covers old ground. I’ve recently discovered this forum whilst looking for some info but, having searched the (extensive) threads on scrapyards, haven’t yet found what I’m after!

As a boy I lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire. I have memories of sometimes passing a scrapyard with piles of aircraft, that I could see through the chainlink fence. They were stacked up neatly just inside the fence – and there were a lot of them. This would have been mid-sixties and my (failing) memory suggests airframes in sky/dark grey or similar.

Bear in mind that I was very young at the time and this was well before my interest in aviation kicked in! Am I remembering correctly? Was it all a dream? This is something that has stayed with me but I suddenly realised that there may be someone with information or even, dare I hope, pictures.

Can anyone help?

Hmmm. Don’t think it could have been out at Bingley… too far away from my home. On the other hand, my aunt did live at Baildon – not that far away. My memory is of somewhere closer to home though.

Nearest option after the rolling mills was Bingley. There were lots of aircraft cut up on site over several decades, i found small parts from Typhoons, up to bulkheads complete with catapult fittings from Fireflys, and large four engined heavy undecarriage units.
There was too much to salvage at the time (early 80’s), and between a couple of us we had to be selective, and elected to save the two Vampire NF10’s that now reside at Aeroventure and Salisbury respectively.

The yard, which i recall as being on Angel Road (?) is now completely landfilled………………

A fellow Bradfordian!

I think Enfield Rolling Mills had a yard in Bradford, so maybe this was what you saw.

Hi Fellow Bradfordian!

Any idea where that was? I have a feeling that what I remember was somewhere off Wakefield Rd, not too far from the church at the junction/roundabout with New Hey Road and Neville Road.

I lived at the other end of New Hey Road.
