On the evening Saturday 4th September in poor light and blustery winds the Abbott-Baynes Scud II glider flew at the Shuttleworth Collection. A previous attempt had been made in April and had ended in a somewhat interesting 30 second flight when the sailplane got caught in the turbulence behind the Tug.
This time the flights were much more successful. The lessons from the first attempt were well and truly learned and 3 flights were undertaken.
Built in 1932 the Scud is Britains oldest flying glider and is a very worthy addition to the collection

It’s a lovely aircraft, it looks like a cross between a Kayak and a Flying Fish but its really graceful in the air.

Finally, that’s his happy face…honest!
Now the test programme is complete its hoped to fly it at shows probably in a segment with the Collections EoN Primay (SG38), wouldn’t it be nice to have Britains oldest glider and oldest powered aircraft in the air together!

I do like the look of these old gliders ———- not that you’d ever get me actually IN one !! lol.

Do they construct the glider around the pilot, doesn’t look big enough otherwise!
It’s the ejection seat – they should have fitted a Mk2a, instead of the Mk3.

Dave
I spared the forumites the pictures of you 😀
I have also deliberately failed to mention Rex who flew the tug, just so he knows the place of a tug pilot :diablo:

It was lovely to see it in the air again. Even better to help launch it!

Thanks chaps. Helmet was worn because the landing characteristics hadnt been fully explored and being a pilot, he values his dashing good looks. mask comes as part of the deal.

Saw the Scud in the hangar as I left the display on Sunday. It was a shame the wind was too strong for the gliders and edwardians as for me they are one of the best parts of the display.
