Sea Fury seized by police (Oz)

http://www.afp.gov.au/media_releases/national/2006/afp_helps_seize_planes,_properties_and_automobile

VH-SHF, Sea Fury and eight other aircraft were seized by Australian Federal Police as ‘proceeds of criminal activity’ and presumably will be auctioned off in the future!

So did the coppers storm the building and wheel clamp the aircraft or did they spend a few hours playing hangar pilots and then headed back to the office!

I’ve been told that the Fury was held at gunpoint, told to drop its hook and flaps, and promptly got the ball and chain. Later said to have lawyered up and shut every valve… 😉 😀

Duty of care for warbirds! – They are the cops not social workers! – I guess an auction or ebay for them would be appropriate!

This does seem different,i assume it’s the crime rather than the money value they are punishing him for,the $335,000 is as well as 9 other crimes committed.
Do the police have a duty of care for these warbirds?.
It’s not quite the same as the clapped out ford with no tax /mot dumped by your local friendly gypsies/travellers/joyriders and taken to be scrapped.

Seem to remember the mix ‘n’ match colour schemed one at Bournemouth is up for sale, although at quite a high price?

That’s the one I was thinking of.

err. what criminal activity were they indulging in? 😀

Moving money in a manner not admired by the authorities. It’s a popular passtime among ex-millionaires in jail in Australia…

See News report

In May 2005, Hart was found guilty in the Brisbane District Court of fraud and misappropriating $335,000 with circumstances of aggravation.

He was sentenced to seven years’ jail.

Hart, 53, was jailed last May for seven years, with a non-parole period of two years and nine months, after he was found guilty of nine counts of defrauding the Commonwealth between June 1, 1990 and June 30, 1991.

He was also convicted of one count of misappropriating $335,000 between September and October 1990.

The planes included two 1950s vintage Russian-made Yakovlev Yak-50 aerobatic planes, a De Havilland Tiger Moth, and a World War II Hawker Sea Fury.

Valuers estimate the planes to be worth $3.5 million, but because many of them are collectable warplanes it is difficult to determine an exact value.

And bear in mind the references to them are in Australian dollars, not US. Yes, it’s a good chunk of the Flying Fighters collection, but not everything on show in that hangar is included.

It is a Centaurus engined Sea Fury as well.

AFP Brisbane co-ordinator for Economic and Special Operations Greg Harrigan said the planes alone were estimated to be worth more than $3.5 million.

$3.5 million and the rest! 😮
