Sea Harrier – reportage

Stumbled across a programme available via the ITV ‘Net Player’ which I have as part of my cable package.

Called ‘Nightwatch with Steve Scott’ latest episode 08 April has an interesting 20 min piece on Sea Harrier operations. Filmed during the last year of operation, is still makes you wonder why it was retired, however the film is now consigned to ‘Historic’ as a result !

Clearly a late night gap filler series but has some interesting reports for all that.

Luckily for us Pagen the Taliban and Somali pirates don’t have their own air forces! As for being ‘simple’ – yes within reason !

Besides all the above theirs also the problem of the RAF not wanting the Navy to have fixed wing stuff….Sharky Ward explains the problem in his book far better than i ever can;)

But as a simple, radar equiped, ship based fighter the GR.9 dosen’t come near.

It was retired because it couldn’t carry as much weaponry as a GR.7/9. It had no potential for engine upgrade – a far smaller fuel load -couldn’t have a probe bolted on without incuring substancial drag – integration of NVG and use of TIALD /Sniper pods on GR.9 make the Sea Harrier look antiquated .

Thats for starters!
