Sea Hawk restoration

My name is Bob and I’m part of the restoration team at Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre, based at St Mawgan airfield in Newquay, Cornwall. Our present challenge is the restoration of Hawker Sea Hawk WV798. We are looking for a number of parts including a front tyre, parts for the nose wheel undercarriage, canopy and a wing folding ram. I am sure as we progress there will be many other parts required. We are also looking for photos or info on its appearance prior to its stay at Hurn as part of the black fleet. Any info gratefully received.

Hi again Bob,
Eeeeek !!! Sea Hawk canopies seem to be like Hens teeth these days. They weren’t a very strong item in Service anyway and what canopies remained with Static Sea Hawks are well clouded, scratched, cracked as most of em spent many years outside. Very difficult item to find I’m afraid. Wish you luck on that one and also on the 2 front Windscreens needed, Well 3 if you are also including the Curved perspex front screen that sits in front of the armoured Flat screen. Keep posting here for needed items as something will turn up.

Hello Bob,
I’ve still got a few bits kicking around from the time of my ownership of WV-903. If you could post back in here on exactly what bits the Museum SeaHawk needs, then guys and myself can go and look in sheds, etc. Part no’s and SECT/Ref’s help along with pics. of items if possible.

Bill T.

Hi Bill the most important parts we require are the cockpit canopy, port side front screen and centre screen both outer and bullet proof inner screen.

Brataccus,
Generally, but not all, Sea Hawk part numbers are of the form of a letter,(A,B,C etc) and 6 digits possibly followed by a “slash number” (/1, /2, /3 etc). See attached.

nice info thanks, the piece I think is sea hawk I was cleaning it more today, initially found one circular stamp which said “DHLE” and “10” under it, today I revealed another circular stamp in better condition and it reads “BHAI” with a 15 under it, wonder what its from…

It is odd that something that ‘historic’ would still be on a dump in this day and age. Having said that I found photos of a derelict Skyraider at Yeovilton, which was taken fairly recently as well.

In the case of WV911 its not been on the dump that long actually having spent many years outside the RNHF hangar as a spares source for WV908, as for the Skyraider that is stored outside the FAAM preservation store Cobham Hall, the reason for that is fully explained by the Curator of Naval Aircraft in a thread somewhere on this forum some time ago if you care to find it

I think there are two wrecks at Yeovilton? There is one on the fire dump and the example that was at Montrose air station until fairly recently, which is the donor aircraft.

The one on the dump is WV911, owned by RNHF. Unfortunately it’s not just a case of going in and taking bits or even taking bits with permission. The aircraft is technically a MoD asset and as such would have to be disposed of via the DSA. The ex-Montrose example is owned by FAAM. Same applies.

Have you tried RNHF, there’s a Sea Hawk on the fire dump at Heron. It’s mostly robbed, but may have a few useful bits left.

Nothing to add other than that I am glad this aircraft is getting some attention! For some reason the Sea Hawk has grown on me in the last year or so. I love the pictures of a row of them starting up together.

I have a few big parts of what I suspect is seahawk but Im not 100% sure, on your seahawk is there any visible stamps or serials or part numbers etc on the panels? if so is it possible you could share some here? to put my mind at rest and to confirm the parts I have are actually sea hawk? would be massivly appreciated

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the mad, mad world of the Key, Historic Aviation Forum 🙂

I’m afraid I can’t help with the bits you want but if I may make a suggestion about the forum…..

If you add (or ask one of the Mods to add) your Seahawk’s serial (and maybe it’s location) to the name of the thread then, when you can spare the time, add updates and photos of your progress and, of course, occasionally tell/remind readers what bits you need.

Good luck, Roger Smith
