Sea Hurricanes

Yet another enquiery for a modelling freind. Does anyone have any drawings or photos of the attachment points and bits for the Hurricanes that where fitted to merchant ships? Where the catapaults of a standard design or not? Does anyone know if any drawings of the catapaults survive?

A quick photo update on the diorama: primer coat applied to hull and sanded. Base coat coming this weekend, then the catapult and other details (they’re not actually glued in place in these pics) can start going down. Finally it feels like I’m heading for the home stretch!

Thanks Steven. Yes, that’s the plan, even though I’ve never modelled water before!

A quick photo update on the diorama

The diorama is looking great. Are you going to put it on a base that replicates the sea?

P.S. Tim – I will be starting on modeling your Hurricat soon. Have the kit waiting and some detail parts on order. Hope to finish by end of December. 🙂

Barrie – colour? Looks a bit like hand-coloured?

And did not all a/c have code letters??

= Tim

I have a digital copy of that pic where the colors look quite different – seemingly an old color pic that aged badly. I used Photoshop to correct it and interestly enough it looks almost exactly like the one Barrie posted.

Tim – regarding code letters, I have seen one or two pics of CAM ship Hurri’s without them. Can’t explain that, though in Barrie’s pic there has been some overpainting (common with the rough conditions at sea so I’ve read) so possibly a code letter is obscured by that.

Excellent video Mauld – thanks for posting.

Interesting to see that they tow the Hurri by it’s forward catapult spools. A little disappointing for my model research was finding this Sea Hurri did not have its aft catapult spools fitted (I asked Shuttleworth about them but they had no details), though the holes for them are visible on this aircraft so that was valuable for locating them on my model. These holes can be seen – one on either side – on the stbd side below the ‘7’ next to the roundel and port side in the bottom left corner of the ‘L’.

What a beautiful Hurricane she is. 😎

Thank you, Chris, for the superb prints yesterday.

What is the wire looking thing hanging down and aft of the rudder, never seen that before?
Looks like it could be towing!

Just for fun here’s a quick Photoshop job on one of the model pics:

That is correct. The modified RAF machines became Sea Hurri 1A’s, though were still RAF aircraft because they were under MSFU control. Sea Hurri 1B’s were purpose built with arrester gear for carrier use, so were FAA, and were also equipped with the CAM catapult spools.

So it isn’t a case of CAM Hurricanes being adapted standard RAF Hurricanes, and Sea Hurricanes being FAA?

My photo – meant the offloading one – & this?

In the KE-H pic it may be there just difficult to make out due to shadow. In the offload pic the spool appears to be obscured by the aft part of the main gear door.
