Sea King Shell at St Mawgan

RAF St Mawgan still exists as an MoD combat survival school, believe the Sea King shell is still an asset for them.

I have letters from the MOD, DSA and The Base commander stating that Preddanacks Wessex are still very much in use as fire training rigs, and anything else these Hulks can be used for. … in a word.. Gutted..I might take a visit with me hacksaw, and cart off a cockpit in the middle of the Night LOL… Nah just patiently wait .. one will come up one day ;):D

Just a Thought…. whats happening if anything ??.. with XS513 sat on the dump at yoevilton, she was in good condition for a wreck as such, has she fallen into more disrepair ??, or does she have a bright future ??

The classroom we used before the exercise had a display on the wall with several photos of her being lowered into the field by a SAR Sea King.

It was used as a procedures ‘frame by 203 (training) Sqdn for a few years before being replaced by a RN HAS (6?), then used for field egress training, not specifically for 1 Sqn Regt, but ‘other’ resident unit. Still in use I believe.
One over sight by the Squadron when procurring this Sea King was that the RAF and RN (SH-3 standard) vary considerably internally, my father played a part in re hashing the interior to be just so for RAF use, he reckoned it would have been a lot easier to have found a non flyer RAF example in the first place!

Wow so this is actually a Sikorsky SH-3D not a sea king.

There is another surviving SH-3D in the UK but neither have been preserved, maybe someone could give the helicopter museum a call see if they could have it if it is not being used?

Nice photos, it was too wet in the field to go any closer, if I had of tried it I think I would have sunk in the mud!!

I’ll have to check with a family member, but I believe it was used for emplaning/deplaning drills by 1 Sqn RAF Regiment until their departure from St Mawgan.
