Seafire LF Mk.III, PP972, G-BUAR hard landing Old Warden how is she?

Seafire LF Mk.III, PP972, G-BUAR had a bit of a hard landing at Old Warden on Sunday looks like the wind dropped just at that critical point and she sunk faster than anticipated with a great recovery by the pilot.
I know she was taken into one of the hangars for a check up on the U/C any news if the aeroplane is ok, departed or still at Old Warden?

Totally agree, I remember a WW1 accident report and the stated reason for the crash was put down to a lack of lift in the air on that day.

Nothing happening there that hasn’t happened to the rest of us at some time or another. Not everything always goes to plan for one reason or another.

Starting the flare 30cm too high and flying 5 kts too slow will result in such a landing. I think there’ s nobody who didn’t make such a mistake. That wasn’t the first and will not be the last hard landing. But it wasn’t the fault of the wind, the short runway or even the aircraft. Most of us were simply lucky that there was no “qualified” audience around, when we had our weak moments.

cant see the need to ‘drop it in’ ,that runways more than ample for an aeroplane with far worse handling at slow speed that a Spitfire. it certainly wasn’t that windy. he simply got too slow and misjudged the round out!

No its not the hedges fault but when your trying to drop it in at the earliest opportunity you really would not want to be to low crossing the roadway also you do not want to float using up valuable runway before your wheels on and of course then if you need a go-round.

I do love the curving approaches done to get in to OW always looks so cool and neat.

I didn’t quite see the incident as I was over by the Pup listening to Rob Milinship’s excellent pilot talk, and one or two parked aircraft obscured my view for the critical second or so, but I got the impression it was hit by a hefty crosswind gust/downdraft just as it was rounding out – I’m not sure it was the hedge’s fault in this case! A hedge trim might well do some good though – especially now there are more and more residents (not to mention the visitors) needing lots of touch-down space (3 Hurricanes, the returning Spitfire Vc and the Comet, for starters!)

Years ago, there was no hedge between the threshold and the road, but it was allowed to grow to ( I guess) to deter goofers hanging round for a free view on display days.

Now that the area and paths have been totally cleared of people during displays, perhaps it is time to bring the hedge down, and avoid this sort of incident.

completely not the pilots fault just a bit of still air , thing is with Old Warden is you want to pop it down just over the hedge even though the runway has been extended

Shuttleworth tweeted ‘After a cosy night in our hangars the Seafire 3 team have checked over the aircraft and it has now left for home.’ https://t.co/AUrE7WtgnR

Being a Seafire she is designed for hard landings.
