I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone out there have a picture of the above Seafire, as featured in the Airfix kit?
I’m particularly interested in the positioning of the CODE LETTERS (S-50 / S5-0), as the available kits and decal sets differ in the way they are presented.
There is a picture of a Seafire, wearing the codes S5-M, in a similar layout to that featured in the Airfix kit (in the Crowood Aviation book).
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I quote:
“….. poor quality image that purports to be of SX273, the codes are arranged S5*0 in the port side. If there’s a better image out there of that aircraft from the p/s, be great to have it. ”Also, SX277 was coded S5-M on the port side .
Not there is a typo, the squadron should be 741 not 714
My original post mentioned S5-M as pictured in the Crowwood book.
The Airfix kit I bought had a note enclosed correcting the Squadron number from 714 to 741.
I think the Warpaint book also gives a different Squadron number altogether for both aircraft. I don’t have my copy handy, so can’t confirm.

No worry Lauriebe, thanks for the info anyway.
Maybe Airfix have got it right after all.
I suppose the positioning of the codes could have been altered during the career of SX273.

Thanks for the information, lauriebe. So Airfix got it wrong.
I have the Warpaint book, but not the Air Britain one. Would you be able to PM me with a scan of the picture, or is that not allowed.
It seems that all the other attempts at portraying this aircraft have got it right.
Thanks again.

Sorry, not able to scan.
The photo that I mentioned shows the starboard side of the aircraft with code S-50. No port side view.

[QUOTE=DaveF68;1893376If you look, CMR used exactly the same order.

Sorry Dave, the codes on the CMR kit are differently positioned to those on the Airfix kit I have.
The Airfix instructions show the port side codes as S5-0, where as the CMR version has the codes positioned S-50.
Both kits agree on the starboard side codes as being S-50.
I would like confirmation of which layout is correct, or were the codes positioned differently during the aircraft’s service?
Hoping for some proof.

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion, The decal artist that did this sheet for Airfix is usually quite meticulous in his research.
If you look, CMR used exactly the same order.

Photo at the bottom of Page 31 of the excellent “The Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm” published by Air Britain shows this aircraft with the code as S-50.
Artwork on Page 3 of ‘Warpaint Series No. 20, Supermarine Seafire – Griffon Engined Variants”, has the same layout.
Hope that helps.
