Mark12,
Thanks for sorting out the serial of that contra-prop Mk.21 for me
And there was me thinking it was a piccy of the “silver and red cross” schemed one used in the Blackpool races in 1947
Whereas the only thing they had in common was that they both served with CFE
Thanks again,
John

Any further news or confirmation on this Seafire project welcome.

What were the circumstances of the fatal crash?

Spit,
Look no further than the ‘Neil Williams’ thread on this very page. It was the Seafire Mk 47 VP441 at Lavenham.

Hi
I am new to this forum but I just want to find out about a Spitfire Aircraft I saw.
It was in the 60s at a dissused airfield at Lavenham (suffolk). As well as them having a Lancaster NX 611 there was also a Contra Rotating Prop (Mk 24????) Spitfire there but not flying. Does anyone know which a/c this may have been and if so WHAT HAPPENED to it. Any help with this will be greatfully accepted???

Seafuryfan,
That is the best one of about dozen I have, taken from the Vampire chase plane.
Whilst flying with the Vampire around the clouds I understand Jack Malloch entered a massive ‘thunderhead’ and it tumbled.
There is the most splendid video of the restoration with air to air, made as a tribute to Jack Malloch.

At last! An air to air of the Malloch Spitfire – well done Mark 12. I never thought I’d see it – seems to be a very elusive Spitfire to be featured in the media. What a beauty.
Does anyone know why the aircraft crashed? I heard many years ago that the aircraft may have departed controlled flight in IMC.

JBS,
Your Mk 21 contra-prop GO-C is LA215.
The GO code in this case is actually the Central Fighter Establishment.

Many thanks for that Mk 47 update. Just checked my database and the last entry I have for VP455 is in storage at Stretton on 25 June 1955. Like you, I would be very interested in any update.
Regards,
Laurie

Mark V:
I bought my copy at the RAF Museum some three years ago. The FAA Museum also had some copies a couple of years back. Don’t know about the present situation. Newark Air Museum Shop also had some copies a couple of years ago. You could try contacting their shop through their web site at:
I haven’t been in the UK for a couple of years, so I’m not up to speed on the present situation.
Mark 12:
I would be very interested in the second FR 47 as well!!!!

Laurie

survivors
http://www.supermarine-spitfire.co.uk
There’s a list of surviving types here, although not sure how up-to-date it is. If anyone can point me to a better listing, that’d be good! (Or supply a list?)
