Seaplanes

Does anyone have any good info on the reason that seaplanes never lasted in military service. Is it due to problem in operating them in poor sea conditions or high operating costs. Surely the ability to land on water has value in operations such as SAR, ASW, COD and special forces insertion. Why did military seaplanes mostly die out?
