Searching for Gordon Brown, Rear Gunner in Pathfinder Force 97 Squadron

Can anyone help in the search for Gordon Brown, Rear Gunner in 97 Squadron please. Service Number 1113002 but believe he later became pilot officer with service no. 196730. He was in my father’s crew in Lancasters during March-August 1944 and did over 20 ops together. My sister is making a documentary about finding his crewmates and would dearly love to trace him or his family. My Dad (Douglas Percy Cannings DFM) seems to recall he was from Yorkshire, but not 100% about this. Any information you can help us with would be very much appreciated.

See Post #8 T/O, bet you’re jet lagged still : ) Great book isn’t it! Did you recognise the dreadful incident over Crowland that Percy Cannings witnessed, that is where our Memorial’s blade came from…small world!

The news item is also featured here on the BBC Lincolnshire website http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-23424107

It was good to read a bit more about Douglas Percy Cannings DFM in Chris Keltie’s book, which was my main holiday reading during my recent USA trip!!

I don’t think so or it probably would have that on his DFM announcement, but thank you for mentioning it. If anyone is in the BBC Look North region, we think the news piece filmed at East Kirkby may be on tonight if anyone can watch.

It couldn’t be George Brown could it? There was a George who did our salaries when I worked for a Dublin based shipping company.

Yes I have, thanks. In fact, the Secretary of the Association emailed everyone on her address book and also put a feature in the Newsletter about it. They also have their own Facebook page now too

Ah yes I remember now!! It was a fabulous book launch and everyone I know who have read Riding in The Shadow of Death have said how brilliant it is. I just need to find time to sit down to read it but too busy searching for Gordon Brown!!

Yes I was Sandy, I was one of the points of contact with Chris Keltie for the book launch – we may have been introduced. I have also been assisting with research for another Winthorpe crew, some of whom were mentioned by Chris. 🙂

Yes, I was. My Dad was reading passages from the book. Were you there then?

Slightly off topic Sandy, but were you at Newark Air Museum last Sunday in connection with the launch of the book, Riding In The Shadow Of Death?
