Hi, Im an scale RC aircraft modeller/ pilot, and im looking for some info regarding my latest build. Its an early Hurricane. I would like to finish it in the colours/markings of the late great Frank Carey, when he flew from RAF Wick in the north of Scotland in march 1940.
I am more interested in hurris that flew from Wick in WW2 than specific pilots, but I am interested in historic accuracy of the model, co-ordinated with info on its pilot. If anyone has any info about any other of 43 squadron hurris/pilots please help me out, as im at the finishing stages of the model and I would like to fly it before the weather gets too poor for flying.
Please could anybody help me?
Thanks,
Barry

Aces High (Chris Shores and Clive Williams, Grub Street, 1994) cites the aircraft flown by Frank Carey when he made claims in Jan-Mar 1940 as being L1728 and L1726 (the latter twice). Mason’s The Hawker Hurricane assigns the codes NQ*B and NQ*R respectively to these two aircraft (which doesn’t of course necessarily mean that they were wearing those codes at the time of Carey’s victories in them)

There are two books on 43 Squadron
43 Squadron the Fighting Cocks by Andy Saunders published by Osprey in 2003
43 Squadron 1916-1984 by Jim Beadle (Long out of print I think)
These should send youin the right direction

You’ll enjoy checking out the ‘ Wings Over Wick’ page on the following link…
http://www.caithness.org/wings/index.htm
Half-way down the page on the Right-hand column/side (if you click the link, marked ‘ Squadron 43 ‘), there’s a detailed account of a K.G.26 Heinkel 111 bought down on the Airfield (8th April 1940) & you’ll notice Peter Townsend & Jim Hallowes involvement.
Try doing a Google search on Caesar Hull, i.e.(whilst flying from Wick with No 43 – involved in downing of He 111, P4 + BA on 28th March).
Also (Flt Lt.) John Simpson & (Sqdn Ldr) George Lott also of 43.
N.B. if you click on the ‘ Hurricanes & Lancaster (Ha,Ha  ) at Wick ‘ photo (taken in early 1940), you’ll note the Hurricanes early two blade props, as well as lack of Fin markings & fuselage roundel surround – which should help with your model/scheme (Whaddya mean you’re model’s a three blader?
