Searching info on Spitfire of 'Cocky' Dundas…

I’m looking for any info or heavens be praised images of Hugh ‘Cocky’ Dundas’ Spitfire Vb that he flew alongside Johnnie Johnson whilst in the Tangmere wing during 1941 (specifically after Bader was posted MIA).

I’ve just produced a skin of Johnsons Spit (the famous one with “Bader’s Bus Co. Still running” on the cowl) for IL2:FB and would like to do Dundas’ as well.

I assume itt would be brown and green with A type roundels underwing and A.1 on the fuselage with no yellow ID stripes on the wing leading edge.

Even a serial no. and code would do, since I can then make at least a feasible attempt.

Thanks in advance gents!

Dundas etc

Hello there,
Not sure if you have this info or not, but as no one else has replied,
maybe it will get the ball rolling.
Referring to the book “Bader The Man and His Men”, by Michael G Burns.

Page 151, refers to Dundas belly landing his
Spit Mk IIa (P7828 QJ-A ‘**** of the North’)
on Monday 8th May 1941
Stated plane damaged, “Badly Bent”. :dev2:

Of course prior to Bader’s exit. Aug 9th 1941.

This book details pretty much every day, and every flying day for sure, and checking through today, I find no refernece that Dundas flew a different aircraft, until after Bader went down, (incidently never posted MIA).
or in fact any aircraft change until after departing.

On Sunday 21st September Dundas was posted away (rest), to No59 OTU (Hurricane unit) at Crosby-on-Eden No81 Group. (page 201)

On 19th Oct Dundas was posted to No610 Sqn, (County of Chester) as flight commander. and on Nov 18 broke his leg, (during a mess game!). 🙁
As a result missed going to Malta, for the famous first Spitfire deploy off a carrier.
Instead was given command of No56 Sqn, the first Typhoon Sqn, and posted at Duxford. Previously No 56 flew Hurricanes, and conversion training and working up was done, slowly as the Typhoons were not the best. (page 219)
His next mention is Aug 19 (1942) still commanding No56 (Typhoon).

I could go on, with later references, but none relate to the period you’re interested in, and NONE refer to Dundas flying a Sptifire Vb, at that time either. Are you sure about that?

On page 14 of the plate section, there is a B&W photo of a Spit, with the ambugious description.
“Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire Mk VIII (AN-O) of No 417 (City of Windsor) Squadron RCAF, No 244 Wing, commanded by Hugh Dundas, taking off on 10 January 1944. It has the extended span wing for high-altitude operations. (Canadian Archives)”
I know this is well past the period you are asking about, but it may be useful info to illiminate that tail number.
Also reading that caption, I’m not sure if they mean the aircraft or the wing were commanded by Dundas.
I can scan the pic if you like, but from memory Dundas was in the Desert Sqns, by that time, so the paint would be inccorrect for sure.

Hope this helps
Cheers
