Second Lieutenant Kenneth Wastell – A Strange Request.

As some of you may have noticed, I am carrying out a bit of research into the life and death of Second Lieutenant Kenneth Wastell RFC. Sadly, he was killed in a flying accident on the 23rd March 1918 when the DH6 he was flying collided with a Church spire in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire. The incident is well known.

Now onto the request. I believe the propellor is hanging inside the Church and that some remains of the aircraft are on display within the Church. I am seeking photographs of the remains, new if anyone would be willing to take them, particularly close ups showing the grain of any structural components which survive. I am trying to determine the type of wood used in the construction of this particular airframe.

I have contacted the resident Clergy who offered help but several months on my emails are no longer answered and no help was forthcoming.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Kev

I work as a volunteer at Norris Museum, St Ives and I am trying to gather more information about Second Lieutenant Wastell than what was covered in the local paper. I noticed your request for help whilst research this sad accident and was wondering if you made any progress and if you could share with us. In addition to the local paper I have seen the Casualty Card for the accident although as I guess you know the RAF musuem beleives all detailed information from the Board of Enquiry no longer exists. If you wish to reply I would be grateful if you could use my personal email as I am not that confident that i will pick up your reply on this web site, my email is howardwarren257(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk.

Best wishes

Howard
