The Iraqi government has been identified as the mystery buyer for 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners whose order appeared last December on Boeing’s order book listed as “unidentified.”
Boeing this month listed Iraq as the buyer of the twin jets worth $1.7 billion at list prices. Nine of the planes will go to Iraqi Airways to fly international routes. A single plane will become a presidential aircraft.
Boeing first acknowledged that it was negotiating with Iraq in 2008 to buy Dreamliners when that country ordered 30 737-800 aircraft and took options for 10 more.
But the company made no formal announcement when the order was signed.
Now that the war-torn country is beginning to return to stability, the country’s national airline is re-equiping itself with a fleet of new aircraft.
