Like most people on this forum I really do enjoy warbirds and older military aircraft in general. I’ve had some great experiences with them, both working with them and flying in them as a passenger. It was whilst working on BBMF that a privately owned Miles Hawk (exact type has disappeared from the grey cells!) visited the Flight for a bit and I took a look around it. It was a beautiful aeroplane and having a recollection of this has made me wonder where one could go to see a multitude of these era aircraft being flown or in a museum? I’m refering to enclosed cabin monoplanes manufactured by the likes of Miles, Percival etc. Is there a golden era airshow (anywhere in the world)?

The Joys of Leather(-ette..)
As a snotty little hangar-rat, I used to marvel at how my uncle’s sidecar used to smell just like an Auster…and offered a similar draft down your collar-stud and aural assault…! We were easily amused in those days…:)

Getting back to aromas. Albeit one is kero and the other petrol, the Piston Provost and the Vamp smell fairly much the same.

Couldn’t agree more about the allure of scents within old especially wooden aircraft. My childhood memories from the early 60’s are of the smell in my fathers Proctor V and have never left me. It was a strong smell of leather mixed with oil and petrol, quite heady. I have poked my head since into various aircraft ie Miles, DH Types, Austers but none has the same smell. Proctor 3 LJF has the exact same aroma and recently at Coventry inspecting Proctor V KIU, even though not yet flown she had the tell tale beginnings of that fabulous eau de Percival. Took me right back to 1963!

Yeah it does pong. I’ve never figured out why it always smells like the inside of a fuel bowser in a Cessna just after you’ve filled up, it used to worry me a bit!

100LL isn’t the most lovely of odours…:) Cessnas also smell of ABS and the remnants of someones Vindaloo from 1969. No match for dope, paint, wood, leather and old British insulation…:p

Could well be, Cessnas do smell a bit of fuel if you brim the tanks. The other think I thought of was that the Cessnas I fly have leather upholstery whereas the Piper has fabric. I think as well with 28 only having the one door the odour has less chance of dispersing cf the Cessna with both doors open and a bit of a breeze you don’t get any lingering smells.

I agree with you Dave that Cessnas do smell different from Pipers. Only a guess but on the Cessnas I’ve flown, there has always been a very slight “weep” from the fuel drain next to the cockpit. I think you might take this smell in to the cabin with you.
