Many of the large fighters such as the F-15E and Su-30MKI can carry both a big payload of A2G ordinance as well as A2A missiles for defense. Not too long ago, usually the duties of ground attack and air cover were handled by seperate aircraft (i.e Osirak where IDF F-16s did ground attack with F-15s providing air cover, etc).
How practical is the self escorting fighter concept in a scenario where the enemy can put up very formidable resistance in the air?
