Selling off the silver

Our local paper in NW London confirms that the MOD is selling RAF Uxbridge, RAF Ruislip and most shockingly, RAF Bentley Priory, for housing development. All for £231m apparently. They state that the bunker at Uxbridge will be “saved”…possibly by a museum or other such group, as it listed. The thought of Bentley Priory either being pulled down or converted into flats is frankly appalling. I would suggest that this is akin to chopping up the Victory for matchwood. Has this government absolutely no sense of history whatever?
They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
How depressing.

Bentley Priory is also listed. Can see it going back to its pre RAF use as a hotel. Just hope they could incorperate some sort of museum, maybe based around Dowding’s office. If the whole site is purchased as one, some housing could be built on the land but the house and gardens kept intact.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit both Bently Priory and the bunker at RAF Uxbridge. If both could be opened up to the public it would be great for future generation’s understanding of the Battle Of Britain.

The sale of Bentley, Ruislip and Uxbridge should come as no surprise to anyone, they are prime ‘Two Jags’ grazing land, what folks should be asking is what is happening to the money realised when the armed forces, what remains of them is in such a state, Guns that will not work correctly, Vehicles that are not maintained or are not up to the job in hand, Boots that fall apart, we have all heard the tales of woe and read the articles associated with them, people may recall all of this when they next place a cross on a ballot paper and they may also recall Churchill’s incessant grumbling about just this very subject way back in the thirties, he got no joy until the bullets started to fly, right now we have a situation were commanders in the field have too ‘Book’ a helicopter or a tank days in advance because there are so few in service or serviceable due to financial constraints, were they have to consider which soldiers they can send up front because they are so short of the correct protective clothing and on it goes, but the responsibility for this rests with non descript people who have little concern for such things other than the price, who view land as a financial nest egg to shore up Whitehall pension schemes. 😡

To be fair, conversion can be done properly and sensitively sometimes.

Royal William Yard, a Naval vitalling yard in Plymouth, (seen here during the filming of “Churchill – The Holywood Years”) has been very nicely converted into apartments and shops.

I used to live right next door when the movie was being filmed.

RAF Hythe/Marchwood on the edge of the New Forest is up for disposal as well. Was home to Short Brothers building flying boats.

I understand that half of the RAF West Drayton site has already been flattened to make way for apartments, the remainder of the site will become housing once NATS moves off site late next year.

Wasn’t BP a communications relay centre? Along with Stanmore Park?

It was the HQ of Fighter Command.

What, more housing to already add to the congested west London area. There is no common sense any more, cramming more and more people intp a Town will not improve the environment. In fact the reverse is true, the quality of life will be worse for the people living there due to overcrowding. More cars, more people, more congestion, more strain on the infrastructure, more chance of flooding, more noise, more polution. This is madness without a doubt. I refer to Uxbridge, as I know it well, a nice town, but for how long. This land should be made into parkland for the enjoyment of the towns people, not more housing. Oh and don’t worry about the councillors, they live outside the area in nice houses in quiet country locations. Town folk need more Parkland not housing…..this is the voice of common sense, but unfortunately money speaks louder ……
