I made the 400mile round trip to Duxford yesterday and enjoyed a fairly good show. There was a few pleasant surprises and the only non appearance seemed to be the sun going “Tech”. A woman neer me spent most of the afternoon wrapped in a blanket. The show itself was a good mix, some nice combos such as P51 and F86, the unexpected arrival of two Gnats with the Hunters ( but no “Blue Notes” from either Hunter. No complaints about the £24 quid, still less than the fuel costs getting there! I guess the show was’nt as slick as legends, with a few quiet moments when nothing was happening. Having said that I sometimes feel Legends is a bit too slick and some of the really interesting participants are never in the air for long.
So, all in all a good day but shame about the weather. I would post a few photos but had a bit of a problem with the camera lens.

The ad would almost certainly be regional, and as you say never having seen one before it was probably booked at ‘test-market’ rates. So probably pretty cheap really.

If airshows are going to survive they need to pull in more than just the already converted. Ads in aviation mags will not reach these people. It’s certainly worth a go to see if this works. Dux will have a pretty fair estimate of the attendance they expect, they will notice any significant increase.

If it cost them £5,000, they only need to pull in an extra 210 people to turn a profit.

I take your point, but would this be showing their concern at the predicted lack of enthusiasts for an uninspiring event.
I notice this morning that there has been a definate lack of people trying to be first to publish photographs and make glowing praises about the flying display.
I did have a bit of a thought yesterday, perhaps with the talk on here over the past few weeks of the imminent return to flight of the Vulcan, that DX were hoping to pull off a coup and get a couple of flypasts, quite frankly that would have been magic, hope it happens today and gives us moaners a kick up the backside.

Hello
Went to Duxford today.Went to walk to see the Fw190 on the field and take a picture .To be surprised to see the chance to sit in it or the ARC two seat spitfire for the small sum of £10 to help the blenheim.

Ats why it was the best ever airshow and I got four pictures of me in areally life Spitfire.

Thank you all involved.

Incidentally, will the TFC enclosure be there so I can take advantage of my pass.

Only available at Legends, but we’re always glad to say hello to Friends when they pass through the hangar. TFC Merchandise is on sale in the hangar before the flying starts.

OK, it wasn’t amazingly sophisticated and not very long, but the question arose, how much did it cost to make and how much did it cost to show on prime time TV during a popular pogramme, must have taken a lot of the budget.

I couldn’t remember ever seeing an advert for an airshow before on TV, and we were surprised that Duxford of all places felt the need to do this.

While slumped on the settee the other night mindlessly watching ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’, we were amazed to see during one of the breaks, an advert for the DX airshow.

There may have been a few grouses about the standard of the participation but I thought that DX always drew in the crowds regardless, it’s so easy to get to from so many places.
I had vowed to go to all the shows this year, but I’m not too well this week and don’t feel like hammering up the motorway today quite frankly, I couldn’t get anyone to go with me anyway, they weren’t inspired enough.
For those who are going, it’s very damp and misty this morning, but I gather it’s going to be a scorcher later and tomorrow.
Having said that, was it two years ago when the mist didn’t clear, I remember shivering under a car blanket watching the cricket on my pocket TV and wandering why the hell it was so clear just down the M11 at Lords.
Perhaps someone going today will give us a report later and if I’m up to it, I might go tomorrow.

Look like many of the OFMC aircraft are booked to display at The Victory Show in Leicestershire. Does anyone know if they will take off and land at Duxford or have they moved to the Midlands for the weekend?

It’s worth waiting for the OFMC to return to liven the place up.:)

Duxford – what a lean list of display aircraft?

There are some jems of aircraft acts out there, so why not sign them up?
24 quid is taking the p**s – and starting at 14:00 to boot. Where is the money going?

Probably the leanest show in Duxford’s history….if it wasn’t for the Piper Cubs, YaKs and Extras there would be hardly anything to watch….:p and yes, Roobs, you did miss the Falklands re-enactment, but then so did the IWM! After all, they left the Pucara in the hangars for that one 😮

I see there is a Yak 52 on our parking plan of participants for the weekend……….
They really do pull out all the stops don’t they. What next, loads of Helicopters re-enacting the Falklands? Oh sorry they did that one in May, how did I miss it?

I notice a lack of RAF hardware, fair enough, we’re being told it’s due to operational commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, but, I heard on the radio the other day, following the USAF friendly fire incident, that all we had in Afghanistan were 12 Harriers, so where is everything being deployed, the Welsh Valleys?
Not knocking the RAF, they are the dogs, but how many operational a/c do we have, surely not all the best pilots are flying 12 Harriers around the Kybher Pass at low level.
Over to you BigVerne.

The RAF has totally changed its displays for this year. They are doing role demos and only at a selected number of events. The Harrier has not displayed at all this year and was never sceduled to.

It seems most of Duxford is currently migrating (presumeably) to Goodwood. I have had at least 6 warbirds pass over this afternoon, out of which I think I’ve identified 2 Spits, a Hurricane and a Mustang and heard but not seen the other 2……

You seem to forget that Lydd is also on!

I just phoned for PPR for tomorrow and heard the tower clearing the F86 for a short display over the field.

Airshow Participants

Flightline Uk are showing two Hunters in the flying display. Does anyone know which two? Could this be the same pair who displayed at Elvington (which I missed), if so it could just tip the balance and persuade me to make the 400 mile round trip to Duxford

Yes I looked at the link and I will be going to Duxford as I have many times before but do they have to charge so much for us veterans who, in the past, flew and serviced the aircraft they are displaying?
