Serbia's JAT Airways to Purchase New Jets

Serbia’s JAT Airways to Purchase Boeing Jets, Resume Flights to New York and Toronto Next Year

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro (AP) — Serbia’s national carrier JAT Airways will purchase Boeing jets and next year will resume flights to New York and Toronto for the first time in 12 years, the airline’s director said Friday.

Aleksandar Milutinovic said JAT was holding final negotiations with Boeing on the purchase of its “latest generation” jets. JAT sources said that under consideration were eight Boeing 737-800s and two 767 extended-range planes which will be leased.

The decision meant that JAT ditched its preliminary deal made in 1998 with Airbus on the purchase of eight A319 jets that were to be delivered by 2005.

“JAT needs Boeing,” Milutinovic said, referring to a long history of Boeing planes in JAT’s fleet and training and maintaining capacities for the U.S.-built planes by local crews. The current JAT fleet consists of Boeing 737-300s and aging Boeing 727-200s.

A deal with Boeing would mean that JAT will purchase new planes for the first time in more than 15 years.

JAT Airways has been struggling to rebuild its fleet and reclaim a position in the market following international sanctions slapped on Serbia during the 1990s for the republic’s role in the Balkan wars. The sanctions included an air embargo.

JAT Airways, formerly known as Yugoslav Airlines, stopped flying to the United States and Canada in 1992 after U.N. sanctions were imposed.

Milutinovic said JAT plans to resume its flights to New York and Toronto in June next year after receiving flight rights from the U.S. flight authorities earlier this week.

=====================================================

Finally!
So, looks like its Boeing & Embraer planes for JAT Airways!
EU will be ****ed

k thats fine B_55

can u tell me the specifics abt the ‘not meeting the requirements’ abt the Russian aircrafts that ur contact said, I want to get down a deeper on that one so as to understand, hope u can help me out on that, tks

He didn’t go into the specifics. Just that the performance specs versus costs didn’t suite JATs operations.

By the way, its not a leasing but purchasing.
The eight 737NG’s are being purchased and two 767’s leased.

When 7E7 comes out, a couple of them will be added to JAT fleet as well.

My contact works for JAT in ther fleet services. I’m not getting any more specific than that for discretion.

He says the plan was to lease them all.

Well, we’ll see what happens

Yeah, its true. Serbia does not care much about EU, especially if the outcome of the Kosovo province status is more dependent on US than EU.

Plus, Boeing has been interested for some time to build a service mainteneance center beside Belgrade’s airport, to service all their planes in the South Eastern/Eastern Europe region. So, more investment and jobs.

About Embraer…over the last month , there have been negotiations between JAT and the Brazillian firm for purchase of about half a dozen ERJ-170 planes for regional routes.

A couple of days ago, this bird visited Belgrade, for a promotional tour. Note the Serbia & Montenegro flag.

Basically, its a done deal as far as Embraer comes. Brazillian railways purchased $100m+ worth of our railway cargo & passenger cars…so in the spirit of free trade, we’re buying something from them;)

…….every prospective EU countrys national carrier has ordered Airbus

A palpable untruth, I’m afraid.

How many Airbus types do LOT (Poland) operate? Or Air Baltic (Estonia)?

Your point about THY would less risible if they weren’t already an A310 operator long before they placed their first order for 737-800s. THY has also operated the A340 for a number of years now.

Finally, how many non-EU national carriers operate Airbus types and how many EU national carriers operate Boeing types?

It just won’t wash, I’m afraid.

It stinks, in fact Brussels and the whole of the EU stinks. Oh. well Peter Mandelson is there now, so they will be no more dodgy dealings, NOT!

The whole EU? So you too? :diablo:

Yes I know….. as what they need is a narrow-bodied long-range one (I hope 737 is not wide-bodied) ….. but Y not Airbus ….. but Boeing was to be expected, after all thats the simplest way to mend ties with Unkil ….. so Airbus again lost out on politics?

JAT order A319 1998 and now lease B737NG. Good for both manufacturs and it look like JAT grow faster as they expect

I am not here to discuss politics, but aviation. However, I expressed my suprise at JAT going for Boeing and not Airbus, as every prospective EU countrys national carrier has ordered Airbus and Turkey which is desperate to join the EU has just purchased a fleet of narrow-body airbus alongside operating similar capacity fleet of NG737!

Many people on this Aviation forum hold different opinions from me, and I accept and welcome that.

I would never seek to tell anyone not to post – I have no right at all to do that, have never said that, and I would like an apology from you for suggesting that I have done otherwise.

But I think I’m quite within my rights to ask you to save your anti-EU political views for an appropriate forum, rather than continually shoe-horning them into discussions on this forum.

Maybe I should just ignore you in the future, eh?

However much you dislike it. Politics does impinge on the airline industry. It is widely recognised that the Turkish national carrier placed a large order with Airbus as it believed it would help its case for EU membership.

In the 70s, BEA/BA were subject to much political pressure which often dictated the make-up of their fleet. They would have prefered the 7372 but were made to go for the Trident and 1-11. Also BY was pressured to take the 1-11 but stood firm and ordered the 732, despite much political inteference.

History tells us politics plays a part in aviation, so check the facts.

Please dont tell me not to post just because we differ in our viewpoints. You dont have the right to do that. This forums should thrive on differences of opinion. The place would be boring if we all felt the same!
