On the advice of a forum member I have been reading up on the story of Sergeant Norman Jacksons incredible act of bravery when atempting to extinguish a fire on the wing of a Lancaster.
Many here I am sure will no of the event for which he was awarded the VC but what is the real story. There are conflicting accounts on the web.
Was the release of the parachute inside the aircraft accidental or intentional in order to give him a means to be tetherd to the aircraft.
Some sites say he was succsefull in extinguishing the flames.
Some sites say the aircraft was attacked again by a night fighter while he was outside the aircraft.
The treatment of Sergeant Jackson once on the ground ranges from being taken care of by farmers to being led through the streets and stoned by locals depending on what account you read.
Did he escape captivity. I have only read this in one account.
What is with out dout is the extreme bravery involved and also the humbleness of Sergeant Jackson. Nobody knew what he had done untill after the survivors of his crew had been released and recomended him for a medal.
I would be very greatfull for any information.
Cheers
Ben
