I’m not sure if this is allowed or not, but plenty of other references to ebay on here so hopefully I won’t get shouted at!
A good friend of mine is making a go of a business selling aviation related furniture and art. Think ‘Wingnuts’ but with a Yorkshire slant!
He’s a top bloke, ex-RAF, and is making some stuff that will get you salivating .I know he’s put a huge amount of effort into this project and has come up with some truly unique stuff which I feel obliged to let you guys know about.
Where else can you get a coffee table with an F8 Crusader windscreen in it?! Or an Adour jet engine compressor vane mirror?! He’s totally genuine and more than welcome to answer any questions about the things he’s selling. Even if you’ve no intention of buying anything, have a look…maybe you can nag your better halves to get you something nice for Xmas. Meanwhile, I’m mulling over selling my girlfriend’s body to get some dosh together to buy the Tornado armoured windscreen coffee table. Any takers?!
Anyway, here’s his ebay shop.

There is a ‘proper’ website…am I allowed to link to it?
Cheers
Bob
*If this post is breaking the rules I’ll remove it, I know some people on other forums get funny about this sort of stuff.

That type of stick top went into all sorts of aircraft IIRC, F104, F4, F15 and a few others too so without any provenance there is no way to tell if it is from an F15.
Regards,
John.
Not so old chap it is F15 as it has a larger thumb button which is peculiar to early F15s

Cheap at half the price?.
I was interested to see the F.8 Crusader coffee table this morning on flea-bay and even more surprised at the new price.
Item number:- 130038025549

Maybe I should start raiding the skip at work, then again there’s enough aircraft junk in my workshop.
Joking aside, there was a tv series on Discovery Wings about a firm in the USA that created furniture pieces out of aircraft parts. They made some beautiful pieces of furniture – including a glass topped table, made from a DC4 or DC6 rudder.
No doubt a lot of money could be made with that sort of thing.

The stick top looks very similar to phantom but then again, same make, different model

The coffee table remonds me of a thing I saw 30 years ago. Some guy made a plywood canopy for his pickup, the windows were B-17 bomb aimer panels.
These aren’t my taste, but I suspect you’ll find far worse stuff on sale in a London shop for a lot more money.

I think those coffee tables are fantastic!! If I could afford one I`d have one in my living room no probs! Makes a change to the usual run of the mill chipboard crap! The bloke is obviously aiming at the Aston Martin brigade who have got the cash to be individual and buy something different! Good look to the guy!!

Perhaps my comments were a little harsh, and for that I apologise. I may or may not have been drinking 😮
Mantog,
I appreciate the fact that your friend is working hard to make a go of this, and I for one wish him the very best of luck. It is always difficult setting yourself up as a business, particularly when you are trying to capture a niche market. I honestly do wish him the very best of British. I may well be biased in the fact that I have torn apart many an Adour and RB199 over the years, and have many parts of these and other engines myself. I was a little disappointed therefore after the headlines of “Seriously Cool Stuff On Ebay” to find what I consider, rightly or wrongly, to be an attractive coffee table with a large unweildy lump of glass wedged into it. It appeared to me to be lazy, with no thought put into the design of it, simply relying on the fact that it has a “Tornado Windscreen” inset into it. The mirrors too reminded me of 1960’s style ‘sunburst’ mirrors. You are quite correct in your comment about everybody having opinions, and those are mine. I perhaps should not have voiced them so forcefully though.
You are correct in your statements regarding the fact that you cannot just go to homebase to pick up a Tonka windscreen, however, if you know where to go, as your friend obviously does, you will see that these items are in plentiful supply and not actually all that expensive, particularly in the case of the scrap Adour stator vanes. Therefore, I was a little shocked to find such a whopping price tag affixed to the items.
I still believe there is enormous scope for your friend to make an enormous success of the business however, and indeed, I have seen some fantastic pieces made over the years from aircraft, and indeed, car engine components. Perhaps he would benefit from employing a designer to come up with some smart designs which he could then build? One of the best pieces I have seen consisted of a Spey turbine disc and LP shaft which was fitted with a glass top and legs, and turned into a table.
As I have said, I apologise for my negativity, however, I feel that at the minute, there is a lot more that could be done before commanding price tags such as those.

Thanks Andy, I appreciate your comments.

I am broadly with where Mantog is coming from – certainly in respect of the dismissive and somewhat blunt description of the pieces on offer. Truthfully, it is not my sort of stuff but I can appreciate the craftsmanship, design and work that has gone into it and I was quite impressed with what I saw at Shoreham although would not have bought it for my house for £50 or £1,000 but only because it isnt “me”. However, I wouldnt dream of telling the maker that it was “crap” even if I thought it was – which I didn’t!! Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and this is a forum. I have personally been subjected to open hostility and criticism (more than once!) on this forum but there is a limit, surely, to how that opinion is put across without having to resort to remarks that are needlessly offensive. Just an opinion….! Andy Saunders
By: mantog - 6th October 2006 at 22:11
Hey, opinions are like a**holes, everyone’s got one!
Trust me, it’s not qute as simple as jigsawing a windscreen into an ‘Ikea table’!!!!!!!!!
J
ust a few points on the matter:
1) Try going down to Homebase to pick up a Tornado/Crusader windscreen
2)Try going anywhere else in the UK to find and buy something like these pieces of furniture
3)Describing it as tat is an insult to the person who made them, and even worse, an insult to the people who have bought them. My friend had a stall at Elvington and the response from the airshow crowd was brilliant. The various pieces of furniture were a big hit and some people were genuinly overjoyed at having the opportunity to buy something different. A lot of work goes into this stuff, and that includes making it and sourcing the materials.
Flipflop…you have the dubious honour of making the first negative comment about these items that I’ve ever heard!! My friend is working incredibly hard to make a go of this. Of course some people will not like the look of his furniture, or understand why it’s so expensive but there’s no need to dismiss it as ‘crap’, there are more constructive ways to express an opinion!!
(You’re right in a way…one of those tornado coffee tables wouldn’t look very good in my flat. But that’s mainly because everything else in my lounge is naff and a really nice piece of furniture like that would demand complete redecoration to match it!!). Anyway, no hard feelings but please, try not to be so dismissive!
By: MarkG - 6th October 2006 at 22:06
Not sure I would have put it quite as strongly as Flipflopman, but I saw this stuff at Shoreham and it doesn’t do a thing for me either if I’m honest.
I would certainly be a bit upset if a 50 quid part I desperately needed for a restoration project only turned up stuck in the middle of a £1000 table!
By: Junk Collector - 6th October 2006 at 21:26
Looks better than some of the junk in my house, i have a very understanding wife ! but no i dont think £1000 is going to win many buyers somehow, i could buy tons more aircraft bits with a grand !
By: Arabella-Cox - 6th October 2006 at 21:25
Each to his own, flipflop man. I am not saying its my sort of stuff but you dont have to buy it! Equally, I wouldnt buy a Damien Hurst. But many would! Andy
By: Flipflopman - 6th October 2006 at 21:14
What. A. Load. Of. Crap.
I’m awfully sorry if this offends certain people here, but what a complete load of junk. £1000 for an Ikea coffee table with a windscreen jigsawed into it. Seriously!!! 😮 That’s absolutely ridiculous. Certainly there are aircraft and indeed automotive engine components that have been transformed into furniture before now, and they can be stunning objects. But really. With apologies to the original poster, that is just ugly and SERIOUSLY overpriced tat. Does anyone really think any of that would look good in their house!!! 😮
I expect to be flamed into next week now, by well meaning spotters, but please. 🙁

Yeah…some, I dunno, Hans Joachim Marseille or somerthing…!
By: David Burke - 6th October 2006 at 20:04
Yeah but does the coffee table have a ‘thin but robust’ provenance?
By: mantog - 6th October 2006 at 17:56
A coffee table made out of a Bf109 wheel? Sounds like the start of a restoration project to me!
