Seventy years ago today

On 12th April, 1937 Frank Whittle successfully ran the World’s first gas turbine engine in the town of Rugby, Warwickshire. Whittle was a serving officer in the R.A.F. and a few weeks short of his 30th birthday.

In a few weeks time, June 1st, it will be the centenary of his birth in a terraced house in the Earlsdon district of Coventry.

I find it terribly disappointing that so little seems to happening to mark these anniversaries.

It must’ve been quite a shock for them. They come over here in there great big heavily armed bombers that fly in huge self protecting groups, first missions they must have thought they were invincible. One hell of a morale busting to find out in a short period of time that you are the hunted.

They didn’t take the heaviest losses amongst the 8th. From memory the groups based at Bovingdon and Snetterton Heath took more casualties. Other groups lost many aircraft in one day also.

But you can choose your own group nickname and they carry this one with pride (rightfully)

Certainly does….. I had heard of the “Bloody Hundred” but did not know how thay had acquired their soubriquet…..

If you ever get the chance Planemike, get along to the 100thBG museum in the restored control tower at Thorpe Abbotts – it’s a sobering reminder of just how many young lives were lost.

Shamelessly stolen from a Facebook post by Clive Stevens. I thought it demanded as wide an audience as possible. Moggy

Yes indeed. Every time I see the Wall of Honour at Duxford outside the AAM I am reminded of those events.

Ok did someone not get a Whittle engine running again recently? This is a hell of an achievement i think!

Didnt Merlin Pete have something to do with that engine? Bex

“I find it terribly disappointing that so little seems to happening to mark these anniversaries”

Well, I can assure you that the RAF College at Cranwell will be marking Whittle’s 100th birthday as I am helping to organise the event! Whittle was both an RAF Apprentice and later commissioned as an RAF officer so we will be marking both these associations with support from other units and august civilian bodies such as Cranfield University. We are fortunate to have a number of exhibits to display already.

Please note however that this centenary event at Cranwell will NOT be an open day for the public but will be mainly for organisations with an aeronautical engineering bias, particularly colleges and the Air Cadet Organisation etc.

I’m sure you already know this but Whittle’s remains lie at Cranwell so its only fitting that we honour this man who changed the World.

Thanks Bamel/buccsociety – have made note in diary to try and get to Brockworth on June 2nd.
G’day to you stombird. Yep I have read that some considered Whittle difficult to work with and, yes, he lived until the end of his life in the USA. Belated “happy birthday” for Friday – keep yer pecker up.
Pete, I don’t think Whittle had a working design in the 1920s but probably had officialdom believed in his idea the Meteor might have seen earlier service in WW2. Mind you the problem of suitable metal and alloys may still have held him back.

Stormbird262

Please remove your little comment about the Poms being able to play cricket again, it annoys me, as we can’t. There’s only one team who can and I can’t bear to watch their superiority, though it’s worth it…. they are so good to watch in a technical sense, good luck to them, they deserve it, and thats from a real English cricket enthusiast and former village player, we deserve the kick up the backside, we have great players who can’t, you have great players who can, Gilchrist opening the batting is an inspiration, perhaps someone ought to try the experiment with Flintoff, after all was there not a modicum of success with Botham in the old days.
Now what was this thread all about, something to do with a/c I believe, the Mods won’t like this.

Ok, back on track, didn’t Frank Whittle have his jet engine designs so advanced in the 20’s, that had the government been so ‘understanding’ and believed and accepted what he said, that we would have had jet fighters prior to 1939 and that WW2 would never have happened due to our aviation superiority. Imagine, reheated Meteors and Canberras ranging over European skies in 1939, no contest, though I must admit that airframe designs may not have been able to cope, imagine a jet powered Gladiator. What possesed our government to give Whittle’s designs over to the Russians and US at the end of the war, must have cost a lot of lives over Korea methinks.

G ‘day RP mate!

G ‘day RP mate,:D

Funny that I was reading exactly that yesterday(now it’s friday the 13th here tis past 12am), while on the Royal Throne, as per usual!

I think I have almost read every book, in my whole collection over the last 6 month’s or so, some twice!

Yep the Great Sir Frank was a very smart little cookie, such an amazing mind for his field, all most passed off as a bit of a nutter by some I’ve read.

But what’s that saying about great mind’s, so close to the edge.

Said similiar thing’d about old Barne’s too;) .

Did he live his life out in the State’s in the end, or move back to the U.K.?

Damn knackered cause it’s nearly 2.00am, recall’s a bit stuffed!

Now from what I think I remember, that type engine later on in it service live’s, was sort of developed to a much better extent by the Russian’s, in a round about way!.

Or was that a different stuff up!:D

Anyway I must crash, Very short visit from me but I am melting again.

Great stuff R.P. mate, it good to see you are still pulling up some good interesting thread’s.

I read the Crono stuff all the time from my Enc’s on the Throne;)

Ok that’s it, I do hope all outthere in forum land, are doing as well as the can be! and family’s too!:o

I’m not to well meself:( , BUT as they say ” IT HAPPEN’S “:D

But I am still reading, and raiding the local library for great book’s and Doco DVD’S and even video’s:) .

So it’s not that bad after all HEY, I’m off like a smelly sock:eek: ,
” Gut Nacht ” all,Stormbird going down.

Sh*T just remembered it’s past 12 am:o , I am now 41 year’s old:eek: , and you can not top a Friday the 13th birthday.

Ooooooo and it’s Black too. EEEEK!

they will be showing a recently completed stunning recreation of the Brockworth built Gloster Whittle E28/39.

And an excellent recreation it is too, unfortunately, due to restrictions, I am unable to show you any images.

A huge round of applause should head to Jet Age Museums, Chris Radford, as he spent the best part of the last two years working on it.
