Sgt AA Jolly, died 12/8/1944

In the cemetery of St Andrew’s Church, Dowsby, Lincs, I recently saw the grave of Sgt Alexander Arthur Jolly, air gunner, (1851711) who died on 12 August 1944. I found a reference in Flight Global archives for 1944, and a photograph in the War Graves Project at

However, I cannot find details of the circumstances of his death. Can anyone oblige? Thanks.

Thanks Kev. I thought you might come up with the answer. He is now at rest in a lovely spot.

This is the second Wellington crash I have been looking at (after one engine failed) in which just one of the crew was killed.

Laurence.

From Chorley’s BCL volume on OTU’s……

12 OTU. Wellington X LN446 Training.

Took off 2134 Chipping Warden for a Bullseye detail. About an hour into the flight, the starboard engine failed and while trying to reach Worksop Airfield the Wellington crashed 2249, heavily, just short of the runway. Sgt. Jolly (Alexander Arthur) is the sole service burial in Dowsby (St. Andrew) Churchyard.

Crew:

F/S J D Forbes RNZAF – Injured.
P/O L S R Smith RCAF – Injured.
Sgt. W R Malvern – Injured.
Sgt. R Fuller – Injured.
Sgt. R Johnson – Injured.
Sgt. A A Jolly – Killed.
