Sgt Eric Miller.

Hi all
This is a big ask but here goes.
Attached is a picture of Sgt Eric Miller, R.A.F.V.R. taken while he was serving with 223 Sqn RAF as in air gunner on Martin Baltimores.
Eric was posted missing, believed killed in action on 22nd July 1944. He was later confirmed killed in action. He was 21 years old.
He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the memorial to missing aircrew at Floriana in Malta
Last year I was approached by his younger sisters (Pauline and Daphne)—now quite elderly themselves and was asked by them if ‘I could find anything out’.
So far I have to confess I haven’t found out much.
I believe 223 were based at Pescara, Italy at the time and were fairly busy disrupting German supply lines in northern Italy by both day and sometimes night in this period.
I believe Eric Miller was killed on a raid to Ancona. The aircraft crashed into the sea with no survivors after leaving the target—probably as a result of FLAK damage.
Shortly after his death 223 was renumbered 30 SAAF and re-equipped with Marauders.
His sisters gave me a bundle of his letters home and although they contain little of operational interest they do give a flavour of the man who was basically very young and homesick. I was extremely moved when I read them.
I believe there is a squadron operational diary at the PRO and I intend to make a visit there when I get a chance but before I do is there anyone on this forum who can shed any light on 223 Sqn in this period?
What I’d really like to find out are the names of his crewmates and any details of his actual aircraft.
As I said at the top a big ask but I’m constantly amazed by the reservoir of knowledge on this site.
Lest we forget
And all the best.
Andy.

Eric Miller

Thanks Flood.
I have done that and printed off the info.
I imagine that the rest of the crew are probably listed there also but without names there isn’t much to on.
All the best
Andy.

Have you looked at the Commonwealth War Graves Commision website?
Just putting in the detail you gave brought this – Eric Miller
Not much – but it does give a memorial reference on the Malta Memorial, in Floriana just outside the main entrance to Valletta.

Flood.
