Shackleton 8 Sqdn Nose Art

I understand that the 8 squadron Shackletons had Nose Art of various Herb and Magic Roundabout characters.

Also that Zebedee was on the tail – all the others just below the cockpit.

From Wiki
“WL741: PC Knapweed
WL745: Sage
WL754: Paul
WL756: Mr Rusty
WL757: Brian
WL790: Mr McHenry (later renamed Zebedee)
WL793: Ermintrude
WL795: Rosalie
WR960: Dougal (Now in the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester in England)
WR963: Parsley (later Ermintrude II)
WR965: Dill (later Rosalie II) (sometimes referred to as Dylan)”

Later the artwork was replaced with names.

Apart from Dougal at Manchester are there any photographs of the artwork on the aircraft available?

I have seen WL970 on Airliners.net but only as the later words.

Also was WR965 painted as Dill the Dog or Dylan the Rabbit?

You might be able to source more details via this organisation http://www.thegrowler.org.uk/ and they are normally very helpful at putting appeals in their newsletter.

WR977 has a small ‘honorary’ Brian the snail on the fuselage, but this is in memory of the late Ken Lindsay who was one of the stalwarts of the aircraft’s restoration in the1990s. WR977’s ‘Brian’ matches the 8 Squadron artwork, albeit smaller than that worn on theAEW.2s and was a badge worn by Ken whilst working at NAM, because everyone teased him for ‘allegedly’ being a slow mover!

I might have some pictures somewhere if it helps!

Good call Farlam!
When WL795 was first taken in and rubbed down in 1988 I don’t ever remember seeing any art work for Rosalie, I don’t know wether the elements had bleached it out or wether it was removed deliberately.
Would love to see examples of the art work though

Well here are three of them:

There is a picture on this website of WL 754 PAUL (Friend of Florence) in late 74.

He has a similar picture of WL 745 a year later with no artwork.

Dougal now at Manchester

Dill at Greenham Common

To answer myself – I assume that Dill is the Dog as it does not look like Dylan the rabbit!

😮 Too lazy and too much hassle – plus I prefer to have a bit more control over the availability of my pictures!

Nice pic. I would upload pics to a free host, such as photobucket. You then link your pics to the post and it dosen’t use up any quota, the pics are a nice size, and they are available to use elsewhere.

‘Brian’ on WR977

Here’s the picture, which is posted in Ken’s memory. It’s a bit difficult to capture without a good set of steps!

I’m reminded of an amusing aspect to Ken’s allegedly ‘snail’ like speed of movement. I once took a picture looking down Hangar 1 at Newark from off the Phantom procedures trainer. The picture included several visitors and Ken – the only figure that was blurred i.e. moving in the picture was Ken!!

A question to the Mods – what happens when my photo account is full? Can my account be reactivated or reset in some way or do I have to remove pictures??

Pagen – there is a lot of information that says Extra Dark Sea Grey ( BS381c 640) and others that refer to Dark Sea Grey (BS 381c 638).

I chose the one that matched the colour of the original unfaded parts that I had – when viewed under D65.

Both painted in Dark Sea Grey – just photographed badly….

I hope you mean Extra Dark Sea Grey (very slightly darker with blueish tint), Dark Sea Grey was the grey camo finish from Meteors to Phantoms.
Impressive cartoons, have you seen a pic of Roaslie on ’95, it appears in one of the Shack books?

WR963 still has “ERMINTRUDE” showing on the starboard side, just below and in front of the cockpit side windows. It doesn’t say “Ermintrude II”.

If you look around her carefully you can see where the 8 sqn markings were so I’ll have a look next time for the art.

Regards,

Rich

This is what we think the Florence would have looked like.

The Dougal artwork is as on display at Manchester.
