Shackleton information wanted.

Wanted: Extracts from the ‘AP’ showing where the transport joints are in the fuselage, wings and tail of the Shackleton 2 (tail dragger). I think this information is given in the front part of the ‘Vol 1’, or whatever it is called to-day.

I thought WR960 was on loan from the RAFM – and I believe that they normally move their own airframes!

Well they did the Oxford and Harvard to NAM. 😉

Still it’s fun to speculate!! :diablo:

WR960

Big job moving ‘960 out.

She went in in bits before the building work was finished (it’s an old market hall where it is housed) and not only will she have to be broken down considerably to get her out the glass walling of the building will have to come out too.

Anon.

 WR963 @ Coventry?

Either that or WR960 @ Manchester Air And Space…. Thought there was rumours of her being moved, possibly moved out? Would they have to partially dissemble to reposition her if needed? I think I’m off the mark, but who knows?

Can you spill the beans on the possible project Fieldhawk, or is it just morbid curiosity?

😮 Sorreeeee Pagen01, that will teach me a lesson for reading newest messages first. Better report for a public flogging for not reading things properly.

So, to put things right, or try to, Thanks Pagen01 for your input. It is much appreciated and very useful.

Am I now forgiven?

To Peter Mills:

Very many thanks for that.

I feel slightly hurt, maybe I should have added detail about the slinging points!;)

There are some descriptions and pictures of WR977’s dismantling, move and reassembly in the book Dedication To Duty – albeit again for a Mk.3 and from a 1977 perspective! 😮

Shack diagrams

If you still need this info I can give you the diagrams from a MKIII. They are much the same for a MKII apart from the outer wing section. The MKIII has the tip tank, otherwise the break points are the same.

The tail/fin/rudder is fairly clear.

I’ll just show you some of the diagrams in the manual. If you need it I can send you via email etc pdf files with relevant info.

More likely the Mk.3 at Long Marston. Jon

He says, Shackleton 2 (tail dragger)!

From memory and rather basically the fusalage transport joints are at, the nose immediately ahead of windscreen panel and bomb bay bulkhead, the foward spar and its fusalage frame, rear spar and its fusalage frame (this mid part of fusalage is seperated and transported with centre wing panel), and rear fusalage aft of the crew entry door. On the actual aircraft the areas are fairly obvious and will be sealed in dope covered fabric strips.
Wings seperate at just outboard of innner engine/nacelles, and at about the mid aileron position, again cntre wing section is integral with fusalage mid point.
Believe all Mks break down the same way.

If you have no joy with the APs (plenty about though) I can describe where the joints are, and try and post up illustration.
