Just a heads up, the SPT have had 4 rear blades go missing from their deep store. Any leads regarding their current whereabouts would be greatly appreciated. The serial numbers are recorded, so if anyone just happens to be offered any please be vigilant.

Rich,
If it’s the place I’m thinking of that the blades have disappeared from, then surely there aren’t many who have access to the place? And of those who do; if any of them are the perpetrator of this act then they will be able to do it again as they are one of the few allowed in such places.
Just a thought, though probably bo**ocks!

The Sky4buy blades belonged to another forumite on here. I don’t know if he still has them available but I guess we’re now in the market.
All remaining blades and other scarce components are being moved to another location. We won’t be letting this happen again.

The worry is them going back for seconds.

This is dreadful news, but only too common in all walks of life, I wonder about the motivation, since a change in the law, scrap metal dealers have to see ID of the person trying to sell metal items & can only pay out by cheque made out to the name on that ID. If they try to sell them on the open market, someone would want to know where they came from, (I certainly would!) I hope the thieves are caught & dealt with appropriately & that you get the blades back.
Regards, Rich.

Any help?

I, too, am appalled at this news.
I’ve never been to the deep store but I believe it is fairly remote. That fact is worrying as the opportunity is there for thieves to get there with little chance of detection. So, the chance of re-occurrence may be high.
DoraNineFan’s idea of a CCTV camera/recorder set up is good – perhaps including a camera on the road/track in/out of the site that will record visiting vehicle’s number plate. Seek the advice of the constabulary and draw upon their expertise.

Hopefully they left some of their own DNA behind with the packaging. Nothing’s sacred nowadays – really hope they catch whoever is responsible and the blades are recovered.

It might be worth getting some of that DNA water that councils proposed using to identify fly-tipping. That way missing goods can be identified in the future.
Two things spring to mind;
1) Shack blades must be quite big? Around 6 ft or so? This must narrow down the number of opportunities the thief, if this is the case, had to remove them. They must have needed assistance?
2) Who would steal Shack blades? Either an avid aviation fan or somebody wanting to make a quick buck from the smelters. Is there a cache of Shack blades anywhere else in the world? Some low-time blades in South Africa maybe?

That’s terrible. Alarm systems and security cameras with digital recorders running a loop are not very expensive anymore. Certainly less than the costs of vintage aircraft parts.

As another interested onlooker, and equally apalled, any thoughts as to motive Rich – do you think they were stolen to order, or merley taken as “failry easy to move lumps of (potential) scrap metal”?
Was there any other easily moved metal in the same place, or were they the only “metal” within easy reach?
Other than for sale as scrap metal I’d have thought they were a bit too easy to trace if stolen to order, as I assume there are not many potential customers for Shack blades (legit or otherwise?)… except perhaps for the growing trendy “recycled engineering as furniture/art” world…

Hi Pete,
There was one ticket in the four discarded bits of packaging, nothing in the other three; thats why we’ve got to go the long way around with the control sheets to establish which serials are missing in action.
We can trace which ones went to Dubai, which ones are on the aircraft, even which ones went on WL790, so its just a process of elimination. Until the team have finished checking which ones are still about I can’t post the missing serials no’s.

Rich

Rich
Have a look for the small paper tickets that go in the packaging.

Hopefully not. We’ve alerted our friends at Coventry as there’s several of us share the store, but it looks as though an outside party has gained access and helped themselves to the blades. I imagine the others will also now be checking their holdings to make sure they’re not missing anything of note.

I am no more than an interested bystander but that is appalling!! Is this sort of theft a common occurrence? And is the likely perpetrator?

Just to add as Blue_2 beat me to it –
These are four loose new blades, they are unboxed but new. Whoever took them was kind enough to leave behind the protective wrappings that they came in, and one more loose blade that was obviously not wanted. We’re currently going through our control sheets to eliminate those which have been fitted to WR963, and those which we still have in stock.
Its a bit of a blow to the Trust, as now we only have enough to equip three engines rather than four when the time comes to use such things for their intended purpose.

Rich
