Shackleton tyre?

Morning!

At a disused airfield somewhere in Cornwall yesterday I stumbled across a rather large discarded tyre which I believe (due to its size) could only have been a Shackleton or Lanc tyre. It was completely smoothly, although not worn out, and the other details are as follows:

Make: Dunlop Power Grip (remould)
Size: 18.00-25 (32 Ply Rating)

Now I’m no tyre expert, so forgive me if this ends up being some sort of dragster tyre!!!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Nick

“Dunlop Power Grip” sounds more likely to be agricultural than aviation.

Nothing to do with lanc or shackleton too small.

At last I have some pics to post!

If nobody can confirm this is from a Shack/Lanc can anyone confirm this tyre is at least aviation related?

Many thanks

Hi Nick,

You can resize your pictures in Adobe photoshop or Microsoft photo editor. Select “resize” with the setting in pixels. If you downsize the pictures in say 600 x 800 pixels, your problem is solved.

I checked our Halifax tires and they are 24.00 x 19.

The later models, Mk 8 and 9 had larger brakes and consequently different sized tires. However these tended to be treaded type tires. Maybe the Shackelton Mk I had similar tires! What was based at the airfield?

Thanks Deryck.

I’m having real trouble posting any pics as they are all over 3mb – can anyone make any suggestions please?!

Location? The former RAF St Eval airfield, hence my thoughts they are either Shackleton or Lanc tyres.

was it just the rubber tire or did it have a wheel hub attached?

Just a tyre I’m afraid. I’ll post some pics once I have downloaded them from the camera…

I doubt Shacks had slick tires, sounds more like a Hally or an early Lanc. Late Mk. Hallies, 8 onwards, had treaded tires and different sized wheels. I can’t remember what size we have on NA 337! Must be an age thing!
