I seem to remember that there was both a curved and a faceted leading edge to Vulcan canopies, does anyone know why?

Agreed Pagen, an interesting trail of discovery.
Amazing the differences you find when trying to fit seemingly identical parts from one machine to another, in other words you wouldn’t know unless you try.

The canopy comes as a purely curved item from the packing case, it is then fitted to the aircraft and the fairings or plates are glued (good old Araldite!), riveted/screwed in place and the voids and edges filled before painting to give the installed canopy the same faceted ’20p’ profile as the windscreen arch, in other words just looking at a Vulcan wont give away this feature.
From inside the cockpit the canopy still appears as a perfect curve.
Thanks to XF940 for posting the relevant AP section in his link.:)
It’s an interesting feature that I haven’t been aware of until now.

I have just taken a drive past the Vulcan cockpit at Hurn airport and it looks to be the same shape as the windscreen ie. like 20p piece not curved. Didn’t look like it had any metal plates on it. Must try to get a closer look at it to confirm.

Jack, it was pulled without reason and as you have seen, others were interested in contributing and learning. There are seven moderators on the HA forum.
Feel free to continue discussion on the design of the Vulcan’s canopy. Play nicely all.
