Sharing a few pics

We’re just putting together the latest Airfield Focus – this one on Bovingdon, when these three pictures surfaced in a stack of originals that have just crossed the pond. These are not Bovingdon, but are of sufficient interest to share, if only because I have never seen the likes of them before!

The Hercules powered Lancaster shows 12 mission symbols and according to the caption on the rear say ‘British Lancaster Fanny Ferkin II landing on the runway at an 8th Air Force Base in England 3 May 1944. 401St Bomb Group. If that is the case, then this is Deenethorpe, and I assume from the noseart it is probably a RAAF Squadron – but no serial or codes are visible.

The flight of Spitfires has no caption on the rear, other than two words – Escort Duty. Some of them carry the codes XX, ZM and VX.

Finally, the ‘Rafwaffe’ shot. Again, caption on the rear states G.I.’s of the 353rd Fighter Group look over captured German planes – a Focke-Wulf F190 (Left) and a Junkers Ju-88 (Right) – at a base in England. April 1944. [Bf-109 In Center]. If it’s 353rd, and the date is to be believed, then the base is either Metfield or Raydon.
