Or should that be Sharks mouths ?. I’ve seen loads of piccies of Warhawks, Kittyhawks, Lancasters and even the odd Chipmunk !! with a ruddy great sharks mouth and eyes painted proudly on the nose / engine cowlings. Who do you reckon has the best/most frightening/scary/realistic rendition and do you have a picture of it ?. Has anyone produced a book on the subject ?.
Cheers
Gary

Hi All,
Why have one sharks mouth when you can have three!

RE: Sharkmouths
Sorry no, PII, though I don’t think it’s ‘so soon’. There was talk of the F-16Is replacing the Kurnass, but I don’t think it will be that soon. Maybe the latter batches, 102 are on order, meaning at least a few more years in service. I believe the initial deliveries will replace the first generation F-16s.
In any case, we should continue this on the AFM forum. I’ve already made a little contribution to your thread there :7

Thanks for the info and pic skythe. I can always count on you for good IDF/AF Phantom stuff. Too bad their retirement is so soon.
You have any idea how much longer they will last (both F-4E & RF-4E/F-4E(S) fleets)?

Personally I feel that the P-40’s of the American contingent in China were the best.

The picture was taken at the IDF/AF Museum in Hatzerim where the 707 is on static display. It is used to show movies about IDF/AF history and is also one of the first things you see on the road to the museum. This specific aircraft was the flying command post during the 1976 raid on Entebbe.
Anyway, Phantom, here’s another gem for you. 187, the IDF/AF’s sole sharkteeth Phantom.

Skythe may I ask what the significance of that brightly painted 707 tail in the background of the Ouragon picture is?
Nice pic by the way.

RE: Sharkmouths
Hi there
Yes Spitfires have had shark mouths painted on them, No. 457 Australian Squadron, known as the Grey Nurse Squadron after the Grey Nurse shark (funny that). There is one flying at the moment with these markings. It is owned by the Temora Aviation Museum.
There is some disagreement as to whether No.112 Squadron or the American Volunteer Group fighting in China was the first to apply shark mouths during ww2, most think it was 112.

RE: Sharkmouths
Yeah, A-10 and F-4 look the best with Sharkmouths! Although I have seen a pic of a rather mean looking F6F with a sharkmouth… Looks great because of the blue background!!

got to agree that the F-4 is the most menacing.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II has got the looks .

RE: Sharkmouths
It’s interesting to note that the famed Flying Tigers actually got the shark mouth idea for their P-40’s from the RAF’ 112 Sqn who was using P-40’s in the MTO theater.

Airlife published ‘Shark’s Teeth Nose Art’ by Jeffrey Ethell, which deals with the subject from WW1 to about 1991.

RE: Sharkmouths
Hi guys.
If I remember correctly the idea for sharkmouths came from a P-40 pilot serving with 112 Squadron in the Desert.

RE: Sharkmouths
Thanks guys.
Gotta agree with you there, if ever there where two planes built for such a paint job, its the ‘Hawk and Phantom. Love to know who first thought of the idea of the mouth on the ‘Hawk.
Ps. Wonder if anyone did a Shark job on a Tiffy ?

RE: Sharkmouths
Nothing beats the P-40 Warhawk and F-4 Phantom in the shark mouth department.
