HI everybody,
Have been looking around for a new sheet metal folder, however not sure which one to choose so asking what would forum members reccomend.
My choices are from Machine Mart 24 inch and vice mounted,Frost classic car suplliers agian 24 inch, vice or bench mounted and Stakesys which is bench mounted via G clamps which also holds material in place whilst folding.
Thank you

Hi All
Just a few words on thanks to everybody who have taken the time and trouble to assist me.

In my opinion…
Frost offer a huge range of stuff, and are rarely cheap. You can often find the same items at a significantly lower price elsewhere
Chronos have a long history as suppliers of good engineering tools and materials
I’d go for the Chronos one

Thank you lads for all your assistance with this one, the machine mart folder iis no longer a contender due to poor standards, the starkey one looks good but is only 18″ and requires G clamps for securing the material which along with G clamps to the bench may meen slipage of both material and folder.
So now choice is down to the Frost item at £60 and the Cronos engineering item at £125…desicions desicions 😀
Might be easier just to move house lol

If need a folder please get a pan brake.. :)The ones we use are 60 -70 years old and still work ok.The blade does need machining though, has a nice hollow in the middle 🙂

What struck me is it appears to have horizontal and vertical holes in it so it can be bolted to the edge of a bench if you have room.

Would you have room for something like this?
As for bench ones, is this more substantial?
Hi TONY T
The former no but the latter has got the old grey cells working..will look more later when I get home as at work at mo..thanks Tony T for this

Often times large ones are very cheap owing to the PITA of moving them. My neighbour picked up a 12ft model for about $200. Probably weighs more than a Buick…

Oldgit;- Knock-down the house next door…:)
In fairness, I do have some Machine Mart gear, and it does the job inexpensively. For some items, – as long as you are not intending heavy use, it’s fine. The folder just happened to be an example of the more unsatisfactory items they sell.
When they offer very lightweight items, one has to ask why the originals weighed a ton…:)

[QUOTE=Snoopy7422;1909257]So true…! I bought a cheapie Machine Mart folder once, just to save space….it was utterly useless and went back directly as the jaws were not parallel. Looking, back at the shop, every example was the same…. Properly engineered tools will weight a lot, but will last forever, well, – nearly..!
HI Snoopy,
This just backs up what Tony was saying, I have bought items from Machine mart in the past and they have given good service such as compressor, air tools, hammers including a bench drill.I did look at thier small lathes and bench miller but was not impressed of the standard.
I aggree in some cases that you get what you pay for,I have yet to hear or read anything bad about the folder from Frost but am holding back from ordering yet.
Regarding space, simply is not there to be had unless a) I move house or b) I knock into the neighbours kitchen..both too expensive 😀

Make room somehow. My 4ft Edwards went through a hangar fire, was refurbished and has been in use with me for over 40 years. Quality may cost more to start with but will cost less in the long run.

Good tack doesn’t have to be expensive…I acquired a load of sheet metalworking tools when a car restorer passed-away. They looked awful. However, cleaned-up and refurbished, they are ready for another fifty years of use and will give better results than cheap tack ever will.

Hi gentlemen,
Thank you to you all for helping me out, sadly I do not have the room for a floor mounted one, unless I can convince “she who must be obeyed” that we need to move then I will have to stick with a vice mounted one.
Tony, thank you for the heads up on the machine mart folder not being the same radius at one end to the other, sadly the starkey one depends on using G clamps to secure the material and its only 18inch long fold so its looking like the Frost version I will be purchasing.
Regards

Edwards do a bench mounted 30″ pan folder, heavy as ****, but more versatile; Rocketeer is right though, they’re never long enough!
Hi you should look throught pages of exchange & mart & buy a second hand edwards 4ft floor mounted folder, much better buy than a bench mounted one.

I always find that the folder you need it 2 inch longer than the one you bought!
The museum has a good floor standing one. I use a 24 in machine mart one that I borrow from a friend. You will find that the fold on one end is not as ‘clean’ as the other end – that is, it is a wider radius of bend. The floor folder is perfect everytime.

Hi
Thank you for your thoughts, Stakesys does look more versitile, Tony T/Trolly aux, aggree that items on evil bay are well priced sadly do not have the room for a floor mounted folder yet.
By: TonyT - 8th July 2012 at 16:19
Totally agree with above, will outlast you too, another if you want wider would be
By: Trolly Aux - 8th July 2012 at 15:34
This is good for the money

The Stakesys machine looks more versatile. For instance, it folds up to 135 degrees against the 90 degrees for the other two
