Sheila Scott Piper Aztec

Possibly the wrong forum (please move if it is).
I have been doing some research into Shiela Scotts solo flight over the north pole and need some pic of her Piper Aztec D, there seems to be little on the web unless I’m missing something.
Any pics or links would be great

Thanks
PaulC

G-ATOY’s accident was due to an engine failure after take-off from Elstree while flown by Max Coote. The oil pressure dropped to zero and the engine seized. Although badly damaged in the forced landing on the Haberdashers’ Aske’s school playing field, nobody was hurt.

Similar to the photo in post 12, what were the circumstances of the crash?

myth too at Elstree

I have been looking for this photo since first reading this thread. The wreck was removed by the Royal Navy’s Mobile Aircraft Repair and Transport Section then based at Lee-on-The-Solent. It was stored there for a while, this was the norm until investigations into the circumstances of the crash were investigated by the D.o.T. Lee provided a secure venue for this purpose. In my time on this section we were tasked with looking after a number of such wreck’s this was probably the most notable.

More Sheila Scott!

A bit small, but here are some contact prints of G-ATOY at Kidlington in 1969. The aircraft is covered in signatures.

I have the negs somewhere.

I didn’t read the bit about where the photo of the Aztec was taken until after I’d looked at the photo and convinced myself it was Kidlington. The area where it was taken still looks much the same today except that the area of apron beyond the aircraft is now full of fuel bowsers.

There’s another book on Sheila Scott that would be of interest:

SHEILA SCOTT – Biography – By Judy Lomax – Book Hardback – ISBN: 0091741149

Judy also wrote ‘Flying for the Fatherland’ – about Hanna Reitsch

I had a lot of contact with Sheila since I was given the job of helping her with her requirements for the aeronautical charts we produced at Jeppesen. She had been to Denver and had met with Capt. Jeppesen, and the word was to ‘give her what she wants’! Much of the original correspondence, at least that incoming from Sheila is preserved and currently at Brooklands, together with my copy of her book duly autographed. I loaned it to the BWPA many years ago for an exhibition.

I treasure the memory of our long telephone conversations, which were by no means confined to aviation.

Yet I met her only once, towards the end of her life, in a wheelchair being pushed by Per Lindstrand. It was at one of Bob Pooley’s Cranfield do’s at the Grange.

I knew that I still had these somewhere. Miss Scott autographed these c.1971 at RAF Luqa. They were the only paper items in my wallet. my Air britain card and my Malta Air Enthusiasts card.

Well done, stangman. You’ve found what I was looking for. 😀

A search of the FAI speed records establishes that the aircraft concerned was PA-24 Comanche 400 N8515P and the unusual name was evidently derived from a certain well-known newspaper plus the first three letters of the aircraft manufacturer’s name.

Seems the old memory cells were not so bad after all. 😉

On another topic, from the dimmer recesses of my brain (and there are few dimmer places:  ) I vaguely recall that Sheila Scott used at least one other aircraft, which she called ‘Myth Sunpip’. I know it might seem unlikely and illogical compared with ‘Myth’, ‘Myth Too’ and the Aztec ‘Mythre’ but can anyone verify whether this was so and identify the aircraft concerned?

On the other hand I could be completely mythtaken….

A color illustration of G-ATOY represents the Comanche in Private Aircraft Since 1946 by Kenneth Munson. She also autographed the picture. As I recall, her signature was in the style of the Piper trademark of the late fifties and early sixties.

Suspect it was white with red and either black or grey trim but can’t be sure as it didn’t survive for long, being written off in the Lock Haven floods of 1972 I believe.

Myth is a female Moth. I was fortunate to meet the lady at Luqa in Malta and somewhere I have her autograph.

Purely personal interest, I remember seeing Sheila on the news when I was a kid, and I have an interest in the pioneering/record breaking flyers, glad you liked it

Sheila Scott

Paul

Not sure if you are aware of this but Sheila Scott wrote a book of her Polar flight in the Aztec entitled “On top of the World”, I notice there is a copy listed at : www.abebooks.co.uk.
