As Mark V says, things have moved on as regards these items on early Spits. 🙂
maybe I should have said moved ‘back’. 🙂

The last I heard from Tom was that there is a Merlin III awaiting overhaul, but initially the aircraft will be flown with the Merlin 35.
Thanks Ed!

Thanks for the pics Tom.
Good to see AR213 on her wheels again and out in the open. 🙂
I’m sure I heard too that the plan was to fit the siamese exhausts, external armour windscreen and a 3 bladed D.H prop (that is, if an airworthy one was sourced) etc.
As Mark V says, things have moved on as regards these items on early Spits. 🙂
As for the engine, will it still be a Merlin 35, or has a Merlin III been sourced?
Cheers

I seem to recall the restoration would include three-blade prop, Siamesed exhausts and correct bulletproof windscreen and canopy, among other things, although I could be wrong.
You could be, but probably not. Things have moved on from the days of four blade props and six stack exhausts on preserved early Spitfires. 🙂

This is probably one of the few UK Spits I’ve never seen flying!

To what extent is AR213’s Major service (if thats the right way to term it), is she going to reappear with an earlier Merlin (Mk.II or III) and a 3 bladed prop, and is she going to have an early type external bullet proof windscreen,or is this beyond Sheringhams finances?
It would be nice to see an accurate Mk.Ia Spitfire, and indeed it will be nice to see AR213 as this is the only airworthy Spitfire in Britain that I’ve never seen!

For me, this one’s special as it was the first operational Spitfire I got to see close-up, at the Blue Max Museum.
That, and the Battle of Britain as well, I suppose…

Must have something to do with the Battle of Britain I think.
For many, yes. For me its because the Mk 1 is nearest to the R J Mitchell masterpiece as he and his team created it.

Ahh, the Mk I, make a nice change from al thos IX’es.
But I am not complaining though.
Somehow the Mk I has more mystique than the later versions. Must have something to do with the Battle of Britain I think. There are several more Mk I’s onder restoration I believe, would make a nice Vic during an airshow

Oooh, I cannot wait! 🙂

Just to whet your appetite, here’s a shot from when we wheeled her out for a brief sunbathe a month or so ago. The engine’s in now and the prop should go on anytime soon. Once we get the canopy back she’ll really start to look like a complete aeroplane once again 🙂

No you are not wrong. The scheme we are applying is indeed the authentic 57 OTU (Hawarden) scheme, coded JZ-E. The Red/White/Blue/ bounce stripes can easily be applied to this scheme for a while, perhaps for some photos. 🙂
Thanks for the clarification Mark.
And it would be lovely if they were applied on a temporary basis. 🙂
So that is means it must be true then!!!
No, thats’ something I meant to say!
On the other hand though, I might have jumped the gun because it said it WAS going to be finished in the 57 OTU scheme, and I assumed it would be with the bounce stripes! :p

I may be wrong, but isn’t the Mk1a owned by the G4 group????
No – its owned by Sheringham Aviation.

They own two MkIXs, two MkXIVs and a solitary XVI, all undergoing various degrees of refurbishment at present.

Still, even if only temporary, it’ll be nice to see

Here is what a good number of us would like to see.
Me too – and I am pretty sure we will see it – just not permenantly!

The owner(s) have never been very keen on the full stripes scheme.
