Shoreham Aerojumble – Sat 6 April 2013

I know its a long while ahead, but the next aerojumble at Shoreham will be on Saturday 6 April 2013.

I am now only running one a year, generally the last Saturday in March.

In 2013 Easter falls early, and so I am shifting it back by one week to avoid the Easter weekend.

A date for your diaries!

Looks like there are a lot of grateful people out there who do appreciate the big effort in trying to revive the aerojumble circuit at the likes of the Shoreham aerojumble.

I personally came into the aviation world of collecting quite late compared to the majority of the forum members and missed the likes of Yeovilton (Fly.buy thanks for posting the video) also missing the early days of Shoreham and the likes and to think i was annoyed at the 6 cars or so that used to beat me to the parking, i would no doubt of been tearing my hair out if id of been stuck out on the A27 and being beaten to any bargains.

Just a shame its a changing world at the moment regulations, price increases etc that the likes of shoreham has sadly come to its end, so i guess we must be grateful for the likes of Newark and the effort made by the Brenzett aerojumble, Popham etc for keeping the circuit alive.

I would also like to thank Andy and co for there great efforts with the aerojumbles also some of the fantastic guest, book signings that were arranged. highlight for me was meeting the late Eric Winkle Brown.

I loved the video that Fly.buy posted would anyone have any other footage photos etc of some of there previous visits ie of the jumbles themselves or any other prize assets that were displayed or purchased.

Yep, we know T.O. and we appreciate it.

I’ll be there for the Spring jumble – just try keeping me away!

Some Aeroboot/Aerojumble organisers are still ‘plugging’ away with events! – 4th March, 2017 😉 (looks to be heading for a sell-out!)

I must admit my heart took an optimistic jump when I saw the title of the thread resurrected; perhaps notification of another event?, but, sadly, not to be.

Andy, you gave us a great event for many years and I’m sure many of this forum’s members will join me in thanking you for your efforts organising it at its various venues. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.

It seemed at the time that it would go on indefinitely but circumstances and market forces changed all that. All in all, many happy memories of meeting great people, seeing some amazing stuff and making some remarkable acquisitions.

Yes, a real shame that the Shoreham event eventually bit the dust.

From its heyday, when we turned away traders because we were over capacity and the days when we had an extra marquee it then went into decline with eBay. The days of traffic queues out to the main road, with the Police telling us we’d have to let a hundred or so cars in for free to avoid congestion on the A27, and when we had up to 20 x fly-ins (many from Europe) never came back. When we tried to revive it, we had a moderate success but, in the end, lack of traders and punters made it non-viable. New requirements for an Emergency Plan, risk assessments, increased rent (150% kike) insurance premiums and escalating costs for staff, marquee hire, airfield fencing, toilets etc. finally killed it at Shoreham.

Unless helping with other events, my aerojumble organising days are very much over I’m afraid.

Unfortunately the days of good aerojumbles are long gone, lots of factors have contributed to its dimise namely liability insurance, event site fees and eBay. Just for novelty value here is a clip on YouTube of the Yeovilton aerojumble back in 1984.

Just reading through this thread once again, there certainly were a few gems that day especially control/yoke/Grip wise. i managed to get myself addicted that day to Grip/yokes with my first purchase a relic Typhoon relic grip AH8005 for a bargain £120 still with covering but minus the gun button but managed to acquire one last year, someone got themselves a bargain with the Comet yoke which i believe went for around £125.

I have to admit i so miss Shoreham a very well organized event, getting up at the crack of dawn from Kent to get there with the early bird ticket in hand meeting people with stories to tell with the same interest and not knowing what you may be bringing home via the house back door so the wife dosnt see lol..

This is one space on the calendar i sadly miss..

Xtangomike

Thank you for your helpful suggestion. :p

Whilst I am sure it would be an ideal location in many respects, the availability of some undercover area without the need to hire a marquee is the critical issue. It isn’t just about re-locating to a more central or convenient location.

Thank you for all the on-going suggestions. I’ll post some updates once the prospective site has been looked at in more detail.

Robs suggestion of Cosford is good location-wise as it’s bang in the middle and right on the Motorway spine and the a/d is operational…and there’s a museum (Free..!)…and catering…..and there’s even a railway stationbang on the peri-track. Shoreham is a fag for most people.

Andy: Does your prospective location have a runway that is open to general aviation?

Heathrow would be ideal Andy….plenty of hanger space….lots of car parking….flyins possible…plenty of scope for continental & asian visitors….
everyone can find it !!…….one problem….its booked up all next year.

Sorry if it seems I am being secretive. That isn’t the intention.

I just wanted to see what the mood was for a change of venue, but I am not really at liberty to discuss the site until I have had a site visit/meeting in early May. After which point I will certainly come back and hopefully get a reaction! And I think it fair to say that there probably will be a reaction.

The continental visitors to Shoreham are thin on the ground, these days. Although we do still have two or three traders ‘on the books’ from Belgium and France.

No, not Gaydon, Moggy. Although I am afraid that the venue under consideration might well preclude fly-ins, which have sometimes been quite significant in number at Shoreham – leastways, that was the case in the good old days!

The only thing you might wish to consider Andy is that people seem to like AJs dispersed around the country, if you like. Shoreham has visitors etc from the continent. Not sure any of the others do.

There will be never be an ideal location….or one size fits all. I guess you go where the market is.

Just testing the water (so far as I am able) to see if there were howls of anti comments for a location to the NW of London and off one of the motorway corridors.

Not Gaydon, surely?

Moggy
