Shoreham Airshow 16 and 17 Sept 2006

Each year Shoreham boasts a bigger and better air show. A few people have had their doubts but in my opinion this year goes down as the best.

On Sunday the display was slick but on the Saturday there were large gaps caused by aircraft inland being clagged in or winded in. In the end most of the aircraft managed to arrive including all the Spitfires and the BBMF. At the same time Shoreham was enjoying it’s microclimate. It was bright but rather breezy and hazy. Saturday had much less haze.

My own highlights was the Sea Vixen touch and go, Peter Teicmans landiing in the Spitfire and Mustang, the Hurricanes which again impressed me with their tight conering and the Spitfire tail chase. The BBMF Spit was topping it too. The aerobatic displays were all impressive. In fact I enjoyed them all.

Most of my pics are from Sunday. Sunday first. Click on thumbs.

Thanks a bunch everybody.

I have seen the attack scenario a few times this year but this was probably the best looking. Up untill this year I had never seen flak which looked like it was surrounding the aircraft except on TV. Unfortunately I did not get a pic of this.

Also I thought that the Hurricanes tight cornering ability was a better match to the nifty 108. I think if it was Spitfires involved in the ‘dogfight’ they would have had to go out wider and faster to prevent their engines from popping or the aircraft from being given too much stress. It would not have looked so good.

The Spitfires waiting to go up was a bonus but even then Duxford’s Big Wing still managed to arrive after the fighting was over!

As far as the explosions are concerned, again good timing. I guess Damien had his finger right on the button.

It would be nice to see this act again next year or perhaps sooner.

You can almost hear Robert Shaw saying, “Don’t just stand there, get one up!” in that first one! 😀

A few more pics to round things off. A combination of Sat and Sun.

My greatest congratulations to the organizers and pilots who put on such a great show.

The attack scene was excellent with good timing.

The shot of the Harrir is after it blew both central tyres after landing. The tyes were changed in no time at all as if it was just a car!
